A Book on Elizabeth Woodville?
A Book on Elizabeth Woodville?

Can anyone recommend a good book on La Woodville. I am not a fan of the lady - something
fair and accurate would fit the bill. Nothing by Hicks or Weir (if in fact they have written
anything on her) though. Ive read Anne Neville by Hicks and all I have to say on that is never
ever again. Weir hates Richard so could not write anything unbiased if she tried.
Thanks

Last time I met Joanna Laynesmith, I think her next book was going to
be a quarter about Mrs. Woodville.

David Baldwin has written a book about La Woodville (Elizabeth Woodville: Mother of the Princes in the Power, published by Sphere). It is fairly favourable to her but I think he tries to be reasonably balanced.
The problem with La Weir is that she either loves or she hates. She has absolutely no middle ground. Her attempts to exonorate Mary Queen of Scots from the murder of Darnley are unconvincing, to say the least, as are her attempts to portray Isabella of France (wife of Edward II) as a heroine. I have not tried reading her recent book about Lady Jane Grey.

Ann - Re La Weir's ficticious book about Lady Jane Grey - just prior to me embarking on a
longish train journey my sister presented me with a copy of said book - Oh I said, lovely,
but its written by Alison Weir! Anyway I thought I would give it a go on the train. I
actually started to enjoy it, thinking it a well written piece of fiction. The parts pertaining
to Jane'schildhood I found very moving, the childbirth scenes quite harrowing. This is not
too bad thought I and then WHAM, she spoils the whole thing by a statement made by one
of the characters as to just what a wicked and cruel man King Richard had been who
murdered his little nephews - I can tell you that book came very close to being hurled
down the whole length of the train. She just CANNOT help herself - she just cannot resist
having a poke! That's the last time I touch anything by La Weir.
