For those who haven't yet read Annette Carson's book "Richard III The
Maligned King" let me say that I cannot recommend it highly enough!
It really is wonderful, beautifully and clearly laying out the
important and controversial incidents in Richard's life and career,
covering all sides of the arguments, and providing all the available
sources.
I absolutely love it, and am certain it will become a book I will be
keeping close by for reference in future.

Paul,
Thank you for the review. Looks like the book won't be published here
in the states until July. I'll be looking for it then.
Thanks for the advice on a positive book.

Annette's Special Edition of Maligned King is ready, and she is now
preparing a new book for publication which she describes as 'a basic
layman's introduction to the Richard III controversy, with the title "A
Small Guide to the Great Debate".'
Good news.

I get a monthly magazine from a remainder book company.  In this month's edition, I found the following:

'This is the first full-length biography of the enigmatic Annne Neville....Written by "the greatest living expert on Richard" (sic), it follows the misfortunes of Anne's short and tragic life, during which Richard not only imprisoned her mother, but also played a part in the killing of her first husband, her father and her father-in-law.'

The book has been reduced from £9.99 to £4.99.......

Ignore. It is simply dreadful, actually libellous to both Anne and Richard.
I'm more an expert on Richard than Hicks as I at least read all the
evidence. He doesn't, making things up sometimes to serve his ghastly
theories.
This book should be burnt!

Well I was wandering along my beach yesterday in glorious sunshine, so
maybe others were too. Either that, or enjoying a break from the er, how
can I put it nicely, recent upset?

Before us Brits discovered the Spanish Costas in the 70s our beaches
would always be crowded when the sun shone. Now, my nearest beach in St
Leonards on Sea, gets a lot of folk at weekends, but it is never
crowded. I drive to one at a place called Norman's Bay, near Pevensey,
where the Conqueror landed in 1066. It is a couple of miles long, and I
have never seen more than three other people on it. Bliss!

An unlicensed biography?

By the way, I was also wondering about the ringing silence on the forum. What a change after wading through a sea of posts every day for months.

Re Hicks's biography (the ostensible topic of the thread), I think I would write to the "remainder" company and tell them that their "expert" is best known for his errors and the best use for the "remainder" of his books is fuel or fertilizer. And I think I would tell them to save paper and postage by refraining from sending me any more trash.

As an undergraduate, I wrote a paper on how the Tarot influenced Yeats' poetry. My English professor at least had the decency to ask if I minded if he took the idea and ran with it. Since I wasn't pursuing an advanced degree, I told him to go for it. He needed tenure, I didn't, and he had the honor to ask.

A few years later, when I was working in the industry in L.A., a producer told me point blank to never, *ever* discuss in any public place -- but particularly in a restaurant -- any idea under development. Or any idea period if I wanted to keep it. Chances were that some other writer was deliberately eavesdropping. Anything that could be nicked would be nicked.

Definitely not in the sun. It's 104 degreed Fahrenheit here. (That's 40 degrees Celsius for those of you in the cool, mist-shrouded British Isles.) And 11 percent humidity. Stepping outside to get the mail or whatever is like stepping into an oven.

to get back on topic, I'm looking forward to hearing more about Annette's book, which I'm guessing is Richard 101 for people just now learning about him from all the media hoopla.

It was edited by guess who - Alison Weir, and I seem to recall that she provided the glowing praise on the dustjacket.
By the by, did anybody else think Ms Weir came across badly on the Anne Boleyn programme? To me she revealed herself, in contrast to the other amateur "authorities" including Philippa Gregory, as incapable of doubt or caution and apt to quote as fact things that were written decades later.
I expect Alison Weir still thinks' 'Anne Neville' was a wonderful book, but I also suspect that Michael Hicks may not.

Interesting. Even though it had nothing to do with his subject matter, Hicks squeezed into his biography of Edward V the theory that Edward IV's Lady Lucy was not an Elizabeth after all but Margaret, the young widow of Sir William of Dallington, and this was just months after I'd posted the same idea on this forum. I've always suspected he nicked the idea and took the credit. Now I'm even more inclined to think so. He did additional research on her but that's not the point. It was a mighty coincidence at any rate.
Wonder if he still lurks.

Well yes Marie. After your excellent riposte in the Ricardian my suspicions would be exactly the same.

If I recall it Weir appeared just as they mentioned witchcraft for the

It was ruined by the cheap 'dramatic reconstructions' but in there were
some interesting things. Worst bit, Weir and her "vast knowledge" apart,
was the idiot who 'knows' Anne had sex with her brother and Mark Smeaton
at least!

Annette told me.....

As for my "Small Guide", the official title is going to be "Richard III:
A Small Guide to the Great Debate". It's only a little A5 paperback with
96 pages so I didn't bother taking it to The History Press, it would've
taken a year to publish and I'd have had to fight with their pesky
editors and designers! So I'm going the DIY route, and will be selling
them myself by mail order. At the moment I'm looking at a price of about
£5, which should make it attractive to the general public, doncha think?
Once again I am not expecting it to make my fortune! It's really aimed
at the layman to explain the controversy -- but it has allowed me to
investigate certain aspects of the disappearance of the princes that I
couldn't otherwise go into, so it may prove interesting to Ricardians
(or infuriating, who knows?!).

I'll let everyone know how to order when Annette tells me it is ready.
Her special edition of Maligned King is now available at 25UKP plus
postage, though she is offering a discount for Ricardians.

Oho! A nautical metaphor. So now I understand "holed," but what is "dhq'd"?

If we get bored, maybe someone can quote passages from Hicks for us to aim cannonballs at. Or from Weir or any other author whose boat we can sink.

BTW, I found to my astonishment that Sean Cunningham agrees with the Buckingham-wanted-to-be-king-himself theory that some of us propounded the other day. Too bad he's less astute on other points.

Just this week, I found Alison Weir's book on the princes in the tower useful.

I'm having my tile replaced and a tall bookcase was threatening to topple after being relocated to its carpeted storage area.

I shoved Alison's paperback beneath a corner and voila! The bookcase remained upright. So her work isn't entirely worthless.

I took away the spine leaving me with a number of sheets that I sewed a
string through and hung up in the outhouse. Best use for AW's works,
helping things move along nicely, and keep clean;-) !

I will admit to paying a charity shop $1 for the used copy I picked up. ::sweet smile:: So glad to contribute to a worthy cause.

I will certainly be interested. I do have the original Malinged King. Bought from the museum in York. Maybe they would be interested in showing the book and ordering by request. Regards. Coral

At the moment I'm looking at a price of about
ý5, which should make it attractive to the general public, doncha think?
Once again I am not expecting it to make my fortune! It's really aimed
at the layman to explain the controversy -- but it has allowed me to
investigate certain aspects of the disappearance of the princes that I
couldn't otherwise go into, so it may prove interesting to Ricardians
(or infuriating, who knows?!).

I'll let everyone know how to order when Annette tells me it is ready.
Her special edition of Maligned King is now available at 25UKP plus
postage, though she is offering a discount for Ricardians.
