Hi everybody,

May I introduce myself shortly. I am Susanne, living in the Netherlands, close to Leiden, and look for a local branch or group to join. As I am cut off from the many local groups in the Uk and hence cannot participate, which is a pity, I wonder if there are other members in the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany (or elsewhere in continental Europe) who would like to set up a branch or group on the continent. I have no idea if a continental group exists and where, but hope I find some likeminded Ricardian enthusiasts in the Netherlands or surrounding countries who would like to have meetings or exchange info, visit places together, etc.

I have a degree in English history and would really like to do some research work on Richard and his time but not sure yet, how to go ahead with it. If there is anybody out there who can point me in the right direction or give me any information, I would very much appreciate it.

I have signed up for the next study weekend in York in spring 2010. I am looking forward to meeting some of the other Richardian Society members there.

Best regards,

Susanne

HI Eileen,

Thanks for the welcome.  Are you a member of a local branch or group?  What are your activities with the Ricardian Society if I may ask?  I have been asked by the committee to consider to start a Netherlands group and place a small post on that in the next Bulletin.  Perhaps the only way to get in touch with members close by.  That's why it would be interesting to know what other groups are doing.  Could you perhaps enlighten me a bit on that?

Best wishes,

Susanne

Hello Susanne,

Did you get to see the 2005 exhibition about Margaret of York and Margaret of Austria? That would be a good topic for your group to study if you decide to start one. I've become very interested in 15th century Anglo-Burgundian relations, and the more we Ricardians learn about them, the better, IMO.

Christine Weightman has written a good book about Margaret of York. It doesn't say a lot about Richard, but I found it inspired good questions. In case you missed the exhibition, here's a URL:

http://www.codart.nl/exhibitions/details/948/

Hope this helps,

Marion

Thank you for telling me about the activities of your local group, gives me an insight in what is done.  The Executive Committee is not allowed to give me any private contact details due to the data protection act.  I will put an item in the next Bulletin and see if there is enough interest in starting a Netherlands group.  In the meantime the committtee thinks about the problem of how to get people acquainted without violating the data protection.

Regards,

Susanne

Hi Susanne,

welcome on board! I'm only a bit slow replying because our phone line was down AGAIN half of last week (BT take note).

I am also hoping to go to the York study weekend, health permitting, so maybe see you there?

Where to start with research? It really all depends. Are you thinking of published sources, or original documents, or both? Latin as well as English? Which aspects of Richard's story/ time would you want to concentrate on? There's a lot of material out there.

Marie

Hi Marie,

Thanks for your words of welcome.  I might start a Netherlands group, if there is enough interest from other members in NL, or surrounding countries.  With regard to that, a member of the excecutive committee has suggested that I post a small item in the next Bulletin.  We'll see what comes of it.

I firmly intend to attend the study weekend in York next spring and hopefully I will meet you there.  With regard to doing research work I thought of looking into the relationship between England and Burgundy in Richard's time but have not done research work ever since I left university, hence I will need a refreshing on that.  I can't imagine how to lay hands on original documents, thinking of how difficult it was to even get a permission for the British Library when doing my research then at university for my thesis (and this was 15 years ago!).  However, I would love to explore the opportunity to read original documents.  Would you need special permission to read them unless they have been reproduced?  As for my Latin, well, this is out of practice ever since I left school and is of no use to me any longer.  In time I will find what I am looking for but until then I need to explore what is possible and what not (also in conjunction with my
full-time job and private life).

Best regards,

Susanne

Hi Susanne,

I don't have any experience of archives on the continent, though I should love to research at Lille one day. The main archives over here are not nearly as unfriendly as they were – I think they are under pressure now to make themselves accessible to justify the public money spent on them.
As far as the British Library is concerned, there are two ways to do it. If you know the exact references, you can order copies using the order form on their website, or you can view in person, for which you need a reader's ticket, but that's not hard to obtain, just a matter of sitting in a queue when you get there and filling in a form. They don't let you photograph the manuscripts yourself, unfortunately, so if you want copies you still need to fill in the order form. The minimum order fee is steep, but you can get 100 pages for it, so it's just a matter of being organised.

The National Archives is the most user-friendly place of all, and their website has research tips, Latin lessons and all sorts. Their online catalogue is also very good (though some series of docs have more description than others), and you can order copies directly on line – it takes a bit of trial and error but it does work. Some of their documents (including all the PCC wills) are available to download directly, and the Ancient Petitions are even free.
If you needed to browse through a lot of large documents it would be cheaper to save them up and make a visit, stay in a cheap B&B and go in armed with digital camera. They let you snap away all day provided the flash is switched off. The first time, you would need to sort out a reader's ticket on arrival, but after that you can use your ticket number to pre-order the documents so they will be ready and waiting when you arrive.
A research community did get started in the Society at one point, with newsletter and forum, but I don't know what's happened to it. I think it would be a nice idea if a list could be run of who has copies/ transcripts of which documents, so we could help each other out.
Don't give up on your Latin. Once you've got back in the swing of reading the English docs, so the paleography itself isn't a problem, start trying out some Latin ones all of one type – most official documents are very formulaic so you get the hang of them by repeated exposure! If I can do it anybody can – I only did two years of Latin at school, half of which was spent staring out of the window. Just take it in easy stages and don't worry too much about restoring the endings on abbreviated words.

For publishd primary sources my favourite site is British History Online.

Good luck getting started,

Marie
