Clements Markham
Clements Markham

I was just listening to Radio 4 and thinking about something else. At
this time on a Thursday, it's In Our Time, presented by Melvyn Bragg,
and today's is about Antarctica. Suddenly they mention Clements Markham.
What, I wondered was he doing in the Antarctic, rather than writing
about Richard III? Turns out he was Secretary of the Royal Geographical
Society in his day job, and took up Richard in retirement.
They have now gone on to that well known geologist, Marie Stopes.
(Apparently she asked Scott to bring her something (specific) back. He
found it and it was with him at the end.)
<http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/in-our-time> You can listen back
to selected episodes back to 2000, though I don't know whether it's
available outside the UK. Sometimes it's science, sometimes it's
history, nearly always interesting.
Best wishes
Christine

Clements Markham was actually a leading figure in nineteenth century exploration - Captain Scott was one of his protegees.
