I hope to go to England next summer and intend to research Henry Stafford, especially his whereabouts and actions between the death of Edward IV and his arrest and execution. Then I intend to compare them with Richard and Henry Tudor's whereabouts and actions.

I hope to take a lot of pictures.
I am going to get a British Rail Pass and need to begin setting up an itinerary.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

I am very proud to lay claim to having taken a small part in finding a picture of Frederick Abberline(Scotland Yard). From my research one of the most honest men England has ever produced. When he passed away he couldn't even afford a tombstone. He deserves to be remembered.

To find the second Duke of Buckingham, you need to travel to the town of Salisbury and visit Debenhams department store, which marks the site of his beheading. Salisbury is on a rail line from Exeter to (London) Waterloo.

I think we will all be thrilled if you are able to uncover anything hitherto unknown or unresolved as regards the whereabouts of the Duke of Buckingham. I have tried to pull together what's already known in the pages of "Richard III: The Maligned King", and I also produced an overview of the main characters in an article entitled "The Summer of 1483: Who was doing what, where, with whom, and why" which was published in the Medelai Gazette, December 2008, as well as in outlets of Society branches (Dorothea will be able to confirm whether it's still online at the New South Wales branch's excellent website - ?).

One particular question I should be delighted if you could resolve. Michael Hicks in his "Richard III" (Tempus, 2000), which suffers from an absence of source notes, claims on page 157 that Buckingham was "Apparently with the king as far as Pontefract on 27 August, the date of his Hereford warrant". Characteristically, on page 138 of the same book he posits that the Hereford warrant was "issued at either Nottingham or Pontefract". This does not chime with other evidence about Buckingham's activities, but when I wrote to ask Prof Hicks about his source he did not favour me with a reply. Maybe you will be more fortunate? Presumably he is still at the University of Winchester.

Good luck with your quest, and please keep us updated!
Regards, Annette

I'm in the middle of writing an extensive article about the duke. But
finding him at times is like walking blindfolded through a fog!
There are however several references to him throughout his life in
unexpected places and at unexpected times. All very frustrating, but
also fascinating.
You need to visit Brecon, on the Welsh borders, Thornbury, Penshurst
and Tonbridge in Kent, Hungerford Place in London, and Kirby Muxloe,
as well as Salisbury, though I do wonder how visiting a department
store will help you get a feel for the execution scene!
Good luck though Brian. Hope you have more luck finding the duke than
Abberline did finding Jack! :-)

Hello, Brian,

Yes, you can find Annette's interesting article on our branch website
(http://www.richardiii-nsw.org.au/?page_id=271 ).

I've just been reading quite a bit about Richard in connection with Oxford and
it seems that Buckingham was not with Richard, when he visited Magdalen College
on 24 and 25 July 1483 (Roberts C Hairsine "Oxford University and the Life and
Legend of Richard III" in J Ptre (ed.), Richard III: Crown and People, as well
as David M Luitweiler, "A King, a Duke and a Bishop", Ricardian Register, Winter
2004).

Good luck with your research!

Cheers, Dorothea

David Luitweiler, American Branch, came to the conclusion that Bucky
didn't accompany Richard on his progress because Buckingham wasn't in
the Magdalen College records. See "A King, A Duke, and A Bishop" in the
Winter, 2004 Ricardian Register Vol XVIII, No. 4.
