If you're interested, check your public TV listing for NOVA, where they'll be looking at how medieval Gothic cathedrals were built.

Found something on youtube that I think could be this programme, but it's
"blocked in [my] country on copyright grounds". The same happened with the BBC
programme on the Battle of Towton, because their iPlayer is available to viewers
in the UK only. So much for the "world wide web"!!!

I can't help you with a video because it's not available as a POD cast,
but this PBS site
<http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/ancient/building-gothic-cathedrals.html>
might have enough detail about the cathedrals.

Just want to comment on Dorothea's post.
Tv programmes and movies cost money to make. They cannot continue to
be made unless they achieve sales. Who would pay for these if they
were all available free to all. Piracy is costing Hollywood a fortune
every month, and as our government hacks at the arts funding here in
the UK we can afford even less than before to give our product away
free. The BBC iPlayer is paid for by British licence payers, so we
have the right to use it to catch up. Bu that doesn't mean it should
be free to the world. Same for us. We cannot access US or European tv
channel product for free. And why should we be able to?

I'm thinking of buying the DVD from PBS so I can bring it to meetings
for view, since I think its of general interest to Ricardians. *But* I
hate that there are country codes that makes it difficult, if not
impossible for people in the US to watch DVDs purchased outside of North
America. Those damn codes really frost me.

Re: US viewers, this week's NOVA is on Medieval Builders
2010-10-21 20:54:36
I'd just like to make clear that I have no intention of pirating any
programmes. I just would like to be able to watch them for my own personal
interest (and yes there are people interested in medieval topics who live
outside of Britain!) - even if this meant paying for the pleasure. Instead I
have to depend on TV stations here and wait to see, whether they deem a
programme interesting enough to the wider public to make it worth their while to
purchase it and actually broadcast it.
And as Joan pointed out, it's the same when I want to buy the DVD of a programme
and there are the country codes. In the old days when you bought videos, you
could watch them anywhere in the world. Nowadays you can only get the DVDs
which are available in your own country and so my choice is again limited by
other people's decisions.
Thank you for the link about the cathedrals programme, Joan, that is great. I
had a quick look, but I'll spend some serious time studying it all when I have a
bit more peace and quiet (eg. when my daughter bis off to school - she is doing
her final exams at the moment, Ancient History today).
Cheers, Dorothea

I have an "all regions" DVD player that allows me to play DVD's from outside of North America. It wasn't expensive--$50 or $60 USD as I recall.

So do I Susan, but some DVD producers have gone to another level of
coding (don't remember what it's called) so that the all regions DVD
players won't work. Interestingly, many DVD players can be unlocked
(similar to cell phones) to allow playing other regions on your existing
DVD. Here's one site for DVD codes and unlocks
<http://www.dvdexploder.com/> .

Re: US viewers, this week's NOVA is on Medieval Builders

advertising revenues also support the funding of tv programs and movies. we are all used to the blatant commercials, but there is also product placement within a production. i.e vehicles and/or clothing etc.
i personally think that the sale of "factory produced" dvd's are extremely over priced. i can buy 50 blank cd/dvd's for 20.00 cdn. i'm paying retail. the mass producers pay a whole lot less. the dvd's produced for public sale are usually done "robotically". therefore, not much in the way of human labour..ergo low wages.
most definitely there are equipment costs to purchase the mass producing assembly line, and fees to artists to design the attractive covers..etc. etc...but, no way should dvd's cost 50 dollars or more per item..and upwards too.
if the copywrite holders would allow pay per download/recording at a reasonable rate they would significantly reduce the amount of piracy. the majority of the illegal market would dry up.
i support recouping costs, but i don't support the excessive greed that the copywrite owner can display, nor do i support piracy. both add to my cost to purchase an item.

Re: US viewers, this week's NOVA is on Medieval Builders

What is bizarre Joan is that for some time now, at least a decade, we
in Europe have been able to buy dvd players that can play dvds from
all regions. The USA does not allow these to be sold, otherwise you
wouldn't have a problem.
The reason for region coding was again one of piracy. Movies do not
open at the same time all over the world so making it unavailable to
be seen at home in a country before it has been shown in the cinemas
was sensible. Nowadays it has got silly. Piracy has ruined it for
movie fans. Movies are now more just like advertising the dvd and
only run in theatres for a maximum of 18 weeks. If I want to see a
movie the way it was intended to be seen I have to rush to see it as
soon as it opens. Leave it too long and it's gone. And only the real
big blockbusters last the entire 18 weeks.

in Europe have been able to buy dvd players that can play dvds from
all regions.

Paul,
Suppose the iPlayer made content available for overseas visitors for a small fee?
