"Elizabeth - the Golden Age" was on ITV1 last night. Cate Blanchett, in the Tilbury scene, wasn't riding side saddle.

I'm not sure that was an anachronism. While side saddles were known
since the Greeks, I don't think they came into popular use in England
until the later half of the 17th century. Maybe she would ride side
saddle for showin' and regular saddle for utility?

My understanding is that side saddles were introduced into England by
Anne of Bohemia, first queen of Richard II. Not sure how quickly they
caught on.
