Very enjoyable interview, Joan. I haven't read This Time yet, but now that I know that it's set in Portland, where I live, I have even more reason to do so.

Do you also live in Portland? As I recall, Sharon Penman does or did.

Correcting myself, it's Sharan Newman who lives near Portland. In the next zip code over from me, in fact, to judge by her email address.

Hi Kay,

Glad you enjoyed the interview.

As it happens, I live in Connecticut--only about 60 miles from the
eastern end of I84. [:D] I had visited Portland about 25years before I
started writing This Time. Although I had specific reasons for picking
Portland (highly skilled and educated population near rural communities
that I haven't seen represented in many books, for example), I think I
secretly wanted a reason to revisit your fabulous city, which I did
before I completed my final rounds of edits.

Maybe you could convince Powells to carry my books. [;;)] I wouldn't
mind visiting again.

I am very taken with the idea of encountering our favorite king on the MAX or at Powell's.

I did once meet Henry VIII, so I thought, walking down Yamhill Avenue in all his costumed glory, with a wench on each arm. When I complimented him on his attire, however, he told me that actually he was Falstaff and he was out to find a bite to eat during a full-dress rehearsal of Henry IV Part I at the Scottish Rite Theater.

Thoroughly enjoyed this interview and subsequent posts - especially as I see that Joan and I seem to be in accord over a lot of things! Whether it's fiction or non-fiction, I'm all in favour of jolting people out of their comfort zones .... Well done Joan.

I couldn't quite remember what SKP's book suggested happened to Edward V and his brother so I took a quick look, although I won't give it away for anyone who hasn't read it. However, in the process I did notice that she accepted the myth that they were accommodated in the Garden Tower, although at least she does have them moved later.
Best, Annette

Thank you Annette. Even though my book is fiction, I do include a
selected bibliography, and both your and Hancock's books are listed
there. I hope people who read my book to the end will explore your book
(and Hancock's too) if they haven't done so already.

I've forgotten how SKP resolved what happened to the princes, but I do
remember that she also bought into to myth that Edward V had a diseased
jaw. Can't blame her, though, since that "myth" is still the prevailing
theory today. I just happen to think that this is a bit of reverse
engineering perpetuated to support that the tower bones are those of the
princes.
