I have to think this series is brilliant, If only I had their budget I could make my Richard film!
I love the look of the series the atmosphere, the sets and costumes and wonderful breadth of characters, and of course the drama itself. Also I'm finding the Wars of the Roses references dropping in quite frequently, but not enough to spoil it.

I just started reading the fantasy series Game of Thrones and is surprised how much the main story line resembles the War of the Roses!! We have the Warring Families, the Starks(York?) and the Lannisters! The Lord Protector from the North is the main character, who hates the South and believes "Loyalty Binds me"!!!! The writer has thrown in a little bit of Maud and Stephen warring for the crown. A little bit of history from each era where they were fighting for the crown! Very entertaining! Anyone else read it yet? Maybe I am delusional but it does seem like pieces of history all jumbled together to make a cool book.

Yes, the first book goes quite clearly along the lines of the War of the Roses... Although the resemblances will decrease in the following books. Good read, ASOIAF is wonderfully entertaining!

You are not just seeing things. George RR Martin has said in talks that it is loosely based on the Wars of the Roses. It's fun to try to figure out which character is based on whom.

I don't think any characters really match, just the general setting.

Read all the books so far, but feel I've been led a bit of a dance...

The author let the stories run away with him, creating too many characters and story lines, so that he ended up dividing the last two books into two sets of characters each with a book of their own. Problem being that you forget where the other lot are up to.

One good thing about the TV series is that it started a long time after the books, so the main story can't be rewritten for the screen.

Best thing is sweet Robin Arynn: Make the bad man fly!

I have to admit, I am concurrently watching the series in HBO. I am not confused yet but it might happen!
Ah, Robin! Can he be Edward of Lancaster?! We know where Martin's sympathy lies!

George R.R Martin openly says the WOTR was his source for the basic story line.
It is fun, to begin with, to guess who is whom.
