From my own point of view, years working on my Richard screenplay, trying to get it produced, the news that the BBc has announced it is to make a series this year based on Philippa Gregory's series of books on the WOTR starring Margaret Beaufort, Elizabeth Woodville and Margaret of Anjou, so not only will the Wars have a female viewpoint, but a heavily Lancastrian/Tudor one.
Yorkists once more will have to bite their lips and hope for better times!
Paul Trevor Bale
p.s. another scriptwriter friend, who has had a number of his scripts produced for cinema and television, has had his series on Edward IV turned down by a number of Hollywood sources, so we aren't doing too well at present.

Especially since it is Philippa Gregory's books they are basing the series on.
The comment below is just one of many on the History Police group on Facebook.
A modern miniseries about the WoTR will probably be made up of sex scenes of EIV shagging hot women interspersed with scenes of EW casting spells/nagging the king, MoA nagging her son, and slow-motion battle scenes with heads being lopped off and spurting blood. I don't even want to think about what the writers/producers will do with RIII, AN, EoY, MB, and HT. It's going to be a train wreck.

I hadn't heard that. Apparently she used to work for BBC radio so I'm sure she has pals there still. If they are going to base a series on fiction, why on earth not use Sharon Penman's book about Richard/WOTR? It is popular and historically accurate. I suppose we should be grateful Alison Weir isn't writing the screen play - or am I speaking too soon?

Well, if nothing else, this dire news has maddened me enough to post on here for the first time in years.
In truth, I have never really wanted to see an adaptation of the WotR or ' The Cousins' War ' ( Ha! ) because I always feared that some sensationalist would take it and run with it.
Oh, for someone with integrity to write as accurately and truthfully as possible. These people were real, however long ago they lived, and to reduce them to bonking machiavellians does us all a disservice.

I agree with Katherine. I do not not trust anyone who is likely to get the job to be fair to the York family; hell, I don't even tust them to be fair to the *Lancastrian* family!
My father always used to say that in England it's 'not what you know but who you know.' Nothing has happened in my lifetime to make me think he was wrong.
I await this series with undisguised dread - I don't even expect them to get the costumes right, let alone anything else.

Hi All Ricardians
Totally agree with Brian on this, they are not interested in truth or in someones reputation.
Unfortunately many people see these adaptations as history and not fiction.

Isn't that what the key players were?? bonking machiavellians?! Not all but
a good few - which makes headlines - very much like today...
I read the White Queen on my last trip back from the UK,on the airplane (!)
& it was so-so, her way of writing is not to my taste, she keeps repeating
the main players thoughts, as if to 'brainwash' the reader into remembering
what Margaret Beauford was all about (in PG's interpretation).
I dont recall anything detrimental to Richard in it...
If there are historical errors in her 3 Queen books then perhaps someone
(with far more knowledge than I have) can do an analysis on that & present
it to the BBC? & maybe they will take account of those. Just a thought...

Lisa, like you, I don't care for PG's writing--couldn't get through one
of her better acclaimed books.
But instead of lamenting what we perceive to be a negative, we should
use the opportunity to promote the society to get more people interested
in discovering the truth. I wonder if this society and affiliates would
exist without Shakespeare. How many would know about, let alone care
about a monarch who ruled for two years some half a millennium ago?
Maybe a society officer could contact BBC (if this hasn't already been
done) and persuade the BBC to add a line about us?

loads of people are not familiar with r3. i had a specialist apt yesterday. i had a book with me regarding r3. the doctor asked who he was. he even even confused him with h8. i took a few minutes to educate him on who richard was and how historically inaccurate the tv program was. i also told him that shakespeare had written his play about r3 to appease the tudor ego, as well that the "bones" had been very likely trotted out in 1674 to detract from current political problems that charles ii was experiencing.
i'll continue to educate him with the two more appointments i have with him, prior to my operation on feb 7th.

Recreations by JudeMaris
2012-01-12 17:15:33
I'm not sure who has seen the link posted by, I think, Sharon Kay
Penman on Facebook, regarding the historical facial recreations done
by JudeMaris on You Tube. They are absolutely fascinating since they
are considerably more than merely before and after images. Her
recreation of Eleanor of Aquitaine is remarkable. The link to it
follows.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVOFwLfchWA&context=C3098c22ADOEgsToPDskIBc2Elk-5eqTY6CMNdmly1
I have suggested to her on her You Tube page that she consider our
Richard (she has done Richard I already and it's on her page.)

Penman on Facebook, regarding the historical facial recreations done
by JudeMaris on You Tube. They are absolutely fascinating since they
are considerably more than merely before and after images. Her
recreation of Eleanor of Aquitaine is remarkable. The link to it
follows.

I have suggested to her on her You Tube page that she consider our
Richard (she has done Richard I already and it's on her page.)

Re: Bad News

One of the problems of course is that history is not compulsory past the age of 14 and is often badly taught in schools. If I had a pound for everyone I've heard someone say "history is boring" I'd be considerably wealthier than I am (which is not wealthy at all.....)
My father and his father were both massively interested in history so I obviously inherited that gene but I also think I was lucky in that I had good teachers.

loads of people are not familiar with r3. i had a specialist apt yesterday. i had a book with me regarding r3. the doctor asked who he was. he even even confused him with h8. i took a few minutes to educate him on who richard was and how historically inaccurate the tv program was. i also told him that shakespeare had written his play about r3 to appease the tudor ego, as well that the "bones" had been very likely trotted out in 1674 to detract from current political problems that charles ii was experiencing.
i'll continue to educate him with the two more appointments i have with him, prior to my operation on feb 7th.

Re: Bad News

my own little conspiracy theory is that the powers that be don't want us to have an interest in history. as a school girl my mother was taught latin at school. by the time i entered school, latin studies were being phased out.
latin and greek are the languages used in law and science/mathematics. if the general population can read these languages..they will indeed see that history repeats itself. and how we the people are manipulated by the current "lords spiritual and temporal". ah the joys of techno-peasantry...not!
our "modern" education system teaches only modern history..and the victor writes history.
if you look at what is currently happening with regards to the shrinking middle class..our children and grandchildren are being dumbed down. they aren't taught to think critically or creatively. for the most part they are not taught to question "authority". those children who do are considered to have behaviour problems.
teachers used to report to parents if their little darling was not handing in assignments. the parents could then bring the child to task for missing work. now the teachers, actually the education system says the child must take on the responsibility to make sure that they are up to date. AND this is the kicker..if they haven't learned to do this by highschool..then they are never going to learn..YET..in canada, particularily my province..the motto being touted..is Learning is a life long experience. ah hypocricy..don't you just love it.
if we don't question authority, and we hop on the conveyor belt of mediocracy..we end up with the status quo.. as orwell said..some animals are more equal than other animals.
so..it is vital for the general population to start really paying attention to who they elect. these people determine our laws and hire the beaucrats who write and enforce the policies according to legislation. this includes what and how our children will be taught in schools.
remember teachers are people too..and they get pushed along the conveyor belt too.
don't ask..don't question.
we need a new renaissance to understand democracy..but incorporated with the lessons learned over the eons with regard to egalitarianism.

Lisa, like you, I don't care for PG's writing--couldn't get through one
of her better acclaimed books.
But instead of lamenting what we perceive to be a negative, we should
use the opportunity to promote the society to get more people interested
in discovering the truth. I wonder if this society and affiliates would
exist without Shakespeare. How many would know about, let alone care
about a monarch who ruled for two years some half a millennium ago?
Maybe a society officer could contact BBC (if this hasn't already been
done) and persuade the BBC to add a line about us?

Re: Bad News

Very true. Your sentence "children who do are considered to have behaviour problems" reminded me of a conversation I had with my daughter's teacher (then aged 6) 2 or 3 days after she joined school here in Australia after moving from the UK. The teacher complained that she was oh so quiet and when she wanted to answer a question she raised her hand instead of shouting out the answer. I told her that I was very pleased to hear about my daughter's good behaviour.
I still learned Latin at school. And though I hated it then, I later realised how lucky I was to have had the opportunity. If nothing else it makes understanding grammar (oh, no, another of those old-fashioned ideas) so much easier, and you can't learn any foreign language if you can't understand the underlying structure.
Today much too often subjects like ancient languages and history are considered "elitist" and therefore pushed aside in public education. However, there are some fortunately some exceptions. On Monday I'm meeting up with a boy who is doing his History Extension project fort the High School Certificate (equivalent of A levels) on Richard III and contacted our branch for assistance.
And why is "elitist" such a negative word - at least in this context? Shouldn't we all strive to do better?
Cheers, Dorothea

my own little conspiracy theory is that the powers that be don't want us to have an interest in history. as a school girl my mother was taught latin at school. by the time i entered school, latin studies were being phased out.
latin and greek are the languages used in law and science/mathematics. if the general population can read these languages..they will indeed see that history repeats itself. and how we the people are manipulated by the current "lords spiritual and temporal". ah the joys of techno-peasantry...not!
our "modern" education system teaches only modern history..and the victor writes history.
if you look at what is currently happening with regards to the shrinking middle class..our children and grandchildren are being dumbed down. they aren't taught to think critically or creatively. for the most part they are not taught to question "authority". those children who do are considered to have behaviour problems.
teachers used to report to parents if their little darling was not handing in assignments. the parents could then bring the child to task for missing work. now the teachers, actually the education system says the child must take on the responsibility to make sure that they are up to date. AND this is the kicker..if they haven't learned to do this by highschool..then they are never going to learn..YET..in canada, particularily my province..the motto being touted..is Learning is a life long experience. ah hypocricy..don't you just love it.
if we don't question authority, and we hop on the conveyor belt of mediocracy..we end up with the status quo.. as orwell said..some animals are more equal than other animals.
so..it is vital for the general population to start really paying attention to who they elect. these people determine our laws and hire the beaucrats who write and enforce the policies according to legislation. this includes what and how our children will be taught in schools.
remember teachers are people too..and they get pushed along the conveyor belt too.
don't ask..don't question.
we need a new renaissance to understand democracy..but incorporated with the lessons learned over the eons with regard to egalitarianism.
okay..putting away my soapbox..maybe..:-))

The irony is that if the producers tried to make an accurate rendering of the Wars of the Roses (which, if they were accurate, would not be called that) they would be inundated with complaints from reviewers and the public, because "everyone knows" Richard was an evil hunchback who murdered his nephews, and so on.

And of course what educators seem to want to forget these days is "those who do not remember the past are condemned to relive it"

If nothing else it makes understanding grammar (oh, no, another of those old-fashioned ideas) so much easier, and you can't learn any foreign language if you can't understand the underlying structure.
