Shakespeare coming up on BBC TV
Shakespeare coming up on BBC TV

I had to walk across the centre of Gloucester yesterday. Passing the
cathedral, I noticed a lot of lights shining into the crypt, and
wondered what was up. Walking down a side street to get to the back
entrance of Shire Hall, I was astonished to bump into my
nephew-by-marriage, a film props man who lives 150 miles away (when not
working).
He told me the BBC is filming all of Shakespeare's history plays for
transmission at the time of the Olympics. They were doing Henry IV there
and then, and going on to Berkeley for battle scenes. He didn't mention
Richard III, but he doesn't know of my interest and probably wouldn't be
particularly interested in Gloucester's connection. Anyway, we didn't
talk long. I had to go to a meeting and he - at 6pm - was on his lunch
break.
Something to watch out for!

I have now looked it up on IMDB (rather surprised to find it there
already). Jeremy Irons is the king, Julie Walters Mistress Quickly,
Simon Russell Beale Falstaff, Alun Armstrong Northumberland.Richard II
is also up, but Henry V isn't, and I don't know about Henry VI (parts I,
II or III) or Richard III.
Best wishes

Thanks so much for all the information. Now based in Australia, we tend to
get the BBC productions eventually - though often months after everyone else
- but the cast sounds great and I shall look out for these.

I know they have already filmed Richard II, and that Henry IV is in the pipeline, but I have not read or heard a
thing of Henry V, VI, or RIII. Hopefully they won't be doing the latter!
