This coming Sunday the BBc Radio 4 broadcasts the final chapter in its dramatisation of Holinshed's Chronicles The Plantagenets 'Richard III - the Three Brothers'.
In the blurb it says "we must take heart from this faithful rendering of the life of Richard III. Forget the despicable hunchback from the Shakespeare play; admittedly Richard is just as demonic in his actions here, and his nephews don't get to enjoy their late teens, but it is a far more sympathetic portrait of a monarch doing what has to be done - even if that means killing off his relatives."
Faithful rendering? How is what is described a faithful rendering?

Oh, dear! More of the same. "We must take heart..."(?) that audiences like their "baddies" with a few good streaks? That's the current trend, alas.

there is some false or misleading advertising. in short the bbc has a lousey copywriter. they could possibly get away with..a faithful rendering of holinshed's chronicle's version of the life of king richard iii..
but definitely not the statement... a faithful rendering of richard's life. other chronicles disprove holinshed.

letters and emails should be sent to the organisation requesting a correction immediately. once again richard's reputation is maligned by someone's ignorance.

the blurb attempting to entice an audience is misleading, even to those who have no interest in the topic.

Plantagenets

I'm afraid I found the first episode of the BBC series The Plantagents
rather dull, with it simply being the presenter wandering about telling
us a narrative history, fairly conservative in outlook, stopping now and
then to talk to the occasional expert, followed by more wandering about.
I'd almost lost interest by the time he got to John and started talking
about the dynasty's prevalence for uncles ridding themselves of nephews!
Not looking good for episode three and our Richard does it? He did get
out the story of John literally killing Arthur himself, the most
colourful, but certainly not the only one of the tales about what John
did to his nephew that may be true, but was told by an "eye witness" who
later turned into one of John's greatest enemies.
But another hour of wandering to go before he strolls into the WOTR!

Thought the same thing myself, Paul. Didn't help that he started with the introduction mentioning about Richard being evil (wasn't paying full attention, but had me shouting at the telly for not being complimentary!). It's not too bad, but too much is being crammed into too short a series. And if he has such a low opinion of John and assuming rumours are truth, it really isn't going to bode well for episode 3. I watched it too and by the end almost, but not quite, wished it were David Starkey :) Bartlett is, I recall an expert on the Normans - he did a programme on them which was much the same; a lot of wandering around in that overcoat and scarf. He's probably a really nice chap. And yes, the wicked uncle soon came in (so to be fair did brother killing brother). But he took a very traditional view on John, who has been demonised as much as Richard. So I definitely think we're going to get the Shakespearean view. BTW did anyone watch 'How to be a Courtier in the Reign of Richard II' last week? I found it quite good fun and much more entertaining than Mr Bartlett. H

I don't think Bartlett (a good lecturer by the way) will ever get to Richard III. I think he may do what many histo's do and stop at Richard II, end of the 14th century. After that they call the kings Lancaster and York, though of course they were all Plantagenets too. Jennie

I think he will - he mentioned Richard. I think next week will be the 100 Years' War and then on to the WOTR. H
