Dear Annette et al.
Eeek!
The King's Great Seal took a tumble, this morning.
Our dog, pursuing a tasty biscuit, set in motion a dominos reaction (like a Rube Goldberg machine, more like), and I discovered the resin casting of King Richard's seal is really two pieces, glued. As it fell from the shelf, the last in a series of things that struck other things (would have been amusing, otherwise), the seal cracked and broke, and some bits are two shattered to reglue.
Does anyone have one (from the 1980s) they're willing to part with? (I bought this at the gift shop at Bosworth, 1980), carried it all over the UK, moved it, flat to flat, only to smash it, this morning. Or would someone have the wherewithal to make a casting? Or do you know if they're still offered for sale, anywhere? Maybe an improved one that bounces.
Figures, it would happen on Coronation Weekend ...and I wish I could report I'd been hoisting a goblet of strong drink at the time, not tossing a dry biscuit to the dog. I still have a paperweight version, gold-toned, but this was two-sided, antiqued "ivory" with a red cord. Who would have thought it so brittle? If I'd only kept it in the flocked pouch....
And the Henry one survived the fall in tact (grrrrr), which just adds insult to injury!
Judy T.
Listen, if someone can replace this, I'll donate L100 to the Search for Richard in addition to reimbursing for the piece. Honest!

Sometimes museums make replica models as merchandise to sell in their shops. You could try the British Museum or the National Archives or something along those lines. I seen them for other monarchs like King John. One other possibility springs to mind - the Bosworth site museum - not sure what its proper title is now.

Thanks.
I tried the British Museum, British Library, etc., even eBay. My two best bets: If I can donate L500 to the archeological dig at Leicester or spend about $50 for one side from a company that does wax replicas. If I can afford the latter, will do, but I may be eating porridge on toast for the next few weeks :-)

Judi,
I have a wax replica of Richard's Great Seal and you are welcome to have it, but I'm not sure where it is. I'll have a good look for it during the next two days and will let you know if I find it.

I have a wax replica of Richard's Great Seal and you are welcome to have it, but I'm not sure where it is. I'll have a good look for it during the next two days and will let you know if I find it.

Sometimes museums make replica models as merchandise to sell in their shops. You could try the British Museum or the National Archives or something along those lines. I seen them for other monarchs like King John. One other possibility springs to mind - the Bosworth site museum - not sure what its proper title is now.

Hi, Mary!
Joan Szechtman reminded me you are also the fabulous Ricardian artist. Duh, I hadn't made the connection!
I'll pay whatever seems fair, plus shipping. I also urge you to join etsy.com. I believe you'll find an audience there. I can introduce you to the contacts I've made; they will be glad to help.
Love,

Hi Judi,
It's really kind of Joan to say that and I really appreciate your suggestion and will give it a try. Many thanks for all your help. I feel really bad as I haven't yet found the Great Seal. I think I put it away safely - too safely because I can't seem to find it. I have a feeling that it is up in the attic and will keep on looking for it. If I do find it, which I hope I will soon, I won't want you to pay for anything, I'll be happy for you to have it as a present from one Ricardian to another.

Hi Mary,
I wasn't being kind, I was being truthful. IMO, Mary's drawings
depicting Richard III in various scenes of his career and wonderful and
display the drama and pageantry that Richard must have experienced.
For those who don't get the Ricardian Register (the American Branch's
quarterly), I'm using some of Mary's drawings for the front cover this
year. To see these covers as well as content, you can access PDF files
of the Register from our members' only page if you are a member of any
branch or parent of the Richard III Society. Contact Pam Butler, online
services, American Branch for access.

it. Â If I do find it, which I hope I will soon, I won't want you to
pay for anything, I'll be happy for you to have it as a present from one
Ricardian to another.

Hi Judi,
I've finally found Richard's Great Seal. It was hidden away in my attic and it must have got hot because one edge has lost a bit of detail going inwards for about half an inch - as if slightly melted, so it isn't perfectly round. The illustrations of Richard and surrounding text are intact - you only notice the flaw when you look closely.
Anyway, if you would like it, you are welcome to have it.

Sometimes museums make replica models as merchandise to sell in their shops. You could try the British Museum or the National Archives or something along those lines. I seen them for other monarchs like King John. One other possibility springs to mind - the Bosworth site museum - not sure what its proper title is now.

Hi Judi,
I've finally found Richard's Great Seal.
Love Mary

Love,

I have a wax replica of Richard's Great Seal and you are welcome to have it, but I'm not sure where it is. I'll have a good look for it during the next two days and will let you know if I find it.

Sometimes museums make replica models as merchandise to sell in their shops. You could try the British Museum or the National Archives or something along those lines. I seen them for other monarchs like King John. One other possibility springs to mind - the Bosworth site museum - not sure what its proper title is now.

Will give you my private info via Joan Szechtman. I'll find a way to send you something you'll like - I record music associated with Richard, do artwork, etc. Many duplicates (I'm a hoarder, so you'll do me a favour!) I do so admire your paintings - have you ever had a show? Several friends do exquisite illuminations, et al. Maybe we could persuade a gallery to mount a showing ("The Reign of Richard III"?) with paintings, fibrearts, etc.? I know one gallery here in Chicago - Gruen - which might (?) be amenable if we did a professional pitch. There's also a stained glass artist near Birmingham, UK, whose work would be an excellent addition, and a Finnish gal with a fabulous imagination and great passion toward Ricardian matters. Another acquaintance of mine, Gina Litherland, might be persuaded to show a piece with a medieval theme...check her out Online (extraordinary painter, surrealist, very much like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varro, but she works
slowly, and might appreciate a low-key venue for just one or two things, if the rest measured up...).
Love,
Judy

Hi Judy,
I'll wait to hear from Joan and get the Great Seal off to you. You sound very talented, I'd love to see some of your work and it is very generous of you to offer to send me something. I've never had a show but would certainly participate in one especially if it promotes Richard. My aim is to present him as a normal human being and not the monster dreamed up by Shakespeare. It sounds as if we are of like mind. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Judy,
I'll wait to hear from Joan and get the Great Seal off to you. You sound very talented, I'd love to see some of your work and it is very generous of you to offer to send me something. I've never had a show but would certainly participate in one especially if it promotes Richard. My aim is to present him as a normal human being and not the monster dreamed up by Shakespeare. Another acquaintance of mine, Gina Litherland, might be persuaded to show a piece with a medieval theme...check her out Online (extraordinary painter, surrealist, very much like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varro, but she
works
slowly, and might appreciate a low-key venue for just one or two things, if the rest measured up...).

I'll pay whatever seems fair, plus shipping. I also urge you to join etsy.com. I believe you'll find an audience there. I can introduce you to the contacts I've made; they will be glad to help.

Love,

Sometimes museums make replica models as merchandise to sell in their shops. You could try the British Museum or the National Archives or something along those lines. I seen them for other monarchs like King John. One other possibility springs to mind - the Bosworth site museum - not sure what its proper title is now.

Hi Judy,
I'll wait to hear from Joan and get the Great Seal off to you.

Hi Judi,
I've finally found Richard's Great Seal.

Mary, ask Joan for my address and Email; and Joan, if you could give me contact info for Mary (with Mary's permission, of course). Thanks to both of you.

Hi Judy,
I'll wait to hear from Joan and get the Great Seal off to you.
LoveMary

Love,
Judy
Just let me know S&H, okay?

Hi Judi,
I've finally found Richard's Great Seal.
Love Mary

Love,
Judy

Judi,
I have a wax replica of Richard's Great Seal and you are welcome to have it, but I'm not sure where it is. I'll have a good look for it during the next two days and will let you know if I find it.
Regards, Mary

Sometimes museums make replica models as merchandise to sell in their shops. You could try the British Museum or the National Archives or something along those lines. I seen them for other monarchs like King John. One other possibility springs to mind - the Bosworth site museum - not sure what its proper title is now.

I still have a paperweight version, gold-toned, but this was two-sided, antiqued "ivory" with a red cord. Who would have thought it so brittle? If I'd only kept it in the flocked pouch....
