Paul, that's because they aren't taught much history. My eldest niece has just done her GCSE and I was helping her plan her revision. It was ALL 20th century - Treaty of Versailles, Weimar Republic, causes of WW2 etc.
Now I know it's important they know about this stuff(I picked it up through osmosis - my parents, uncles etc all being in WW2 and the rest from tv I think) but that is all they do and she was bored to death with it because there was no variety (and no medieval skullduggery and family infighting!)

Holy Britannica, Batman! These were the official answers?
In the mid 1960s, some woman wrote a letter to the editor of The Orlando Sentinel, opposing the teaching of other languages in publicly-funded schools. She ended her argument with: "...if English was [sic] good enough for Jesus Christ...." My Dad nearly exploded; somewhere, I still have the clipping.
Is it any wonder so many people cling to the Tudor propaganda in re: Richard?

So true, Liz. When I talk to our nephews about events in the 19th and earlier centuries, they're mesmerized, as if listening to fairy tales. Thank goodness for Inter-Library Loan!

I do believe the English are the most ignorant people in the world when it comes to history. There seems to be a certain paranoia about it, as if we might suddenly develop a national identity and all become raging fascists.
Most people know:
The date of the battle of Hastings
How many wives Henry VIII had
"We" beat Germany in the Second World War
That's about it.
Personally, I suspect its a deliberate policy; if people knew real history they may be less liable to swallow the ghastly personality cult of the modern monarchy.

Why is all of this surprising, if children think that their own parents lived in "prehistoric" times before computers, etc.?
Don't forget this history test answer: "Joan of Arc was the name of Noah's wife."

Re: Ignorance

I think it may be lazy teachers being part of the problem. History channel is chiefly programmes about WW2 so there is an awful lot of visual history available. Think how many pupils watch a movie version of a book they are supposed to read rather than sit down and read it.
Of course I always ask why the first world war happened? You g back a bit and again have to ask why did this happen then? Soon you're at the French Revolution. Why did this happen then and what did it give the world? Then you ask about what happened before then etc etc and soon you are back in Roman and Greek times talking about the origins of democracy. But then I guess totalitarianism in the 20th century is better documented....
Depressing.

I live near Hastings and heard someone talking outside my window saying 'Well Hastings is famous for the battle' His friend answered 'What battle?' I nearly screamed out the window 'Why do you think so many businesses round here are called 1066 you idiot?' but restrained myself!
