Hi!
Hi!
2012-08-07 11:05:13
...think it would be easier to get into Fort Knox than this Forum, but better late than never!
I've been having a look around and there's some grreat discussions. I won't anyone anything though, I know how annoying having brains picked and then not acknowledged is.
THANKS VERY MUCH for having me!
Good Soc, good forum.
Cheers.
Ed

That was a good start ;)

What's the context of the statement farm of the subsidy ? Is it in a book
or manuscript? From a British or non British setting?

Re: Hi!

Thanks for the reply, I feel a bit naughty about breaking my word. Dictum non est mein pactum?! lol
It's from an entry in the Fine Rolls calendar, "a commitment to X by X... of the farm of the subsidy and the alnage of cloths for sale"; (I'm OK with the 'alnage') it's quite a long entry but if you can access it it's the Calendar of Fie Rolls, Membrane 1 (8) 735. Mind you if it is online it's blooming annoying because I spent half of yesterday sweating over a photocopier ;)
It's obviously something related to a subsidy? Or is it a misreading of 'form', as in maybe the original says 'the form of subsidy'...? Sorry I'm sort of rambling to myself!

Re: Hi!

welcome to the group. in the era you are researching, a subsidy was somewhat like a tax paid to the king/crown or church.
in our era, a subsidy comes to the famer via government/heirarchy.
without knowing the context, it is a bit difficult to actually define what you are looking for. but my best guess is the farmer had to pay or tithe either crops, cash or goods of equivelant value to the owner or holder of the land. (the crown actually owned all the land, nobles and gentry could hold in the name of the crown or a higher muckie-muck".

in our era, a subsidy comes to the famer via government/heirarchy.
without knowing the context, it is a bit difficult to actually define what you are looking for. but my best guess is the farmer had to pay or tithe either crops, cash or goods of equivelant value to the owner or holder of the land. (the crown actually owned all the land, nobles and gentry could hold in the name of the crown or a higher muckie-muck".

Hi Roslyn, and thanks for the reply! Here's the exact CFR entry, May
19th 1483:
Commitment to John Brugge, -by mainprise of John Kymer of Pole, co.
Dorset, `gentilman,' and Richard Tery of London,
`goldsmythe,' –of the farm of the subsidy and alnage of
cloths for sale, together with a moiety of the forfeiture of unsealed
cloths exposed for sale, in the town and suburbs of Bristol; to hold
from Easter last until Michaelmas following, rendering 32l. 6d.
(according to the yearly rate of 64l. 12d. for which answer has been
made to the king) and an increment of 12d., and answering for the other
moiety of the forfeiture ; with proviso for the increase of the farm,
and appointment of the said John Brugge as alnager and collector in
terms as above.
I've worked it all out APART from the actual 'farm of the subsidy'; I'm
not sure it's about an actual farm itself, as the whole entry is about
cloth taxes for merchants in Poole! Thanks for your help, appreciate it!

Could he have been a "subsidy-farmer"/ "tax-farmer" - one who collects subsidies and pays them to the Treasury, in exchange for keeping a slice?

BINGO.
I think you might just have it sir.
As in, someone who has it ('it' being responsibilty for collecting?) 'farmed out' to them. It would make sense, cheers!
It's been breaking my head for the afternoon; thanks to everyone for their help!
Now- next question-!
