Richard's Burial Place....
Richard's Burial Place....
2012-08-07 18:41:52
Hi....well Im not actually a newbie but on the other hand as I havent posted for so long I might as well be...
But...what has brought me back.....I was reading in June's Ricardian Bulletin that an archaeological search for Richard's body, in the Greyfriars area, was taking place this Summer.
Being an incurable optimist I have been awaiting good news. As nothing has been announced the search has probably not gone well. We could not have had a wetter summer here....which could not have helped matters. Hass anyone any news on this?
It would be such an amazing and wonderful thing...if Richard's remains could be traced and buried somewhere more suitable for an annointed king. My little legs would not be able to get me there fast enough to visit his grave and lay some flowers....
Loyalte me lie....
Eileen

That might be it, after all we had at lleast ONE week of good weather... last month!!! Think there's a thing on the website somewhere (I think that's why I'm under the impression I am) but can't find it as am still learning to negotiate the site.
PS: call me 'Ed'. Someone has put my full name there, which I don't really use.
Hope you're well!

Thanks for the info- I knew I'd seen something on it, but thought it was the site rather than here.
Cheers.

Oh thanks Judy.....all fingers crossed....
I feel sure Richard's remains are still there.....I presume it has been figured out how the Greyfriars was laid out and where he would have been buried. It would be very difficult to dig up a large area in such a busy place. Maybe near the alter....mind you if Henry had anything to do with it......! I Never did believe the stuff about he was thrown into the River Soar by a mob. I cannot see the good people of Leicester had any reason to do that.

Hope so too!
But burials could maybe be tricky then, if you happened to be burying your king's enemy. Which strictly they would have been.
Examples: Simon de Montfort buried at Evesham Abbey, then reburied. Llewellyn ap Gryffydd, unknown burial place? Not sure.

I Never did believe the stuff about he was thrown into the River Soar by a mob. I cannot see the good people of Leicester had any reason to do that.

Re: Richard's Burial Place....

Hmmmm...sometimes though 'enemies' could be buried in prime positions, immediately after death and not moved at a later stage.....Prince Edward springs to mind....very close to the high alter at Tewkesbury with a very nice plaque in the middle of the choir...Hastings buried in St Georges Chapel very close to King Edward as Edward has requested in his Will....By the way going off on a tangent but I read today that Henry gave Richard's Book of Hours to his mother....what a cheek!
