...just to pick some brains, am I right in assuming that this is SERIOUSLY O.O.P?!?! I see it's not in the Society shop and the Amazon prices are mildly eye-watering to say the least! Blimey, it's like powdered unicorn horn... ;)

PS: just to explain, it's because I'm doing a thing on Richard in London in April 1483, and Caroline Barron references the work in her London in the Later Middle Ages: Government and People 1200-1500' (Oxford 2004) well I daresay she can afford to re-mortgae for a copy of it?! >Jest, apologies.

Hi - I believe you are looking for this book for research purposes. If you don't actually need to own it, you'll find it in several libraries. I don't know if you're in the UK, or if you are a member of the Richard III Society, but it's in the Society's Barton Library from which members in this country are able to borrow free of charge in return for paying postage costs. The British Library is another obvious source, but if you don't already have a card it's a bit of a rigmarole to get one for just this one book. The London Library has a copy, and is brilliant because you can consult any number of books on open shelves in one visit and conveniently take scans or photocopies. They do one-day tickets for £15 and the application procedure is very simple. You can search their catalogue online.
If you want to buy it, you can only get second-hand copies. I did a quick search and found that the Amazon price is not the most competitive. Type 'booksearch' into Google and you'll find a number of companies that find books to order - there are some better prices available.
I believe you also wanted to ask me something about a source - I suggest you contact me directly, my email address is emailATannettecarson.plus.com (substitute @ for AT, of course).
Regards, Annette

I almost feel guilty to say I have a copy I bought when it first came out. I think it was around 20 UKP at the time which was 1983.
I keep it wrapped up in a plastic bag which makes a lot of people smile curiously.
But I want to preserve the smell and pristine quality of it.
When I refer to it I am almost inclined to use a pair of white gloves like the ones the best of tv presenters wear when looking at historical documents and artefacts!
I also bought a copy of The Great Chronicle of London which one of my ancestors had a hand in. [Yorkist part of course!] A facsimile of the original it is very large, as was the price I seem to remember. I was doing well at the time thank goodness!!

I think I'll stick to looking for something a little more realistic...
...like a 1st ed. of Cranmer's Bible :)

they aren't "that" expensive. bookfinder.com has copies listed for under $300 canadian, most are in the $250. range. now, there are some that are listed for over $1000. i picked up my copy for about $80. cdn a few years back. yes, it is a little worn and scuffed..but the info is in perfect shape.
so your purchase can be looked at as investment, or even the cost of an evening out for two. if you want it all glossy and having an untouched look. you pay for it. or if you just want functionality..the price goes down.
meanwhile, get to know a used book dealer in your area, and give them you list of most wanted books and ask them to keep an eye out for bargain prices.
let your friends and family know about which books you'd really like to own., it makes christmas, birthday or just because occassion shopping easier for them too.
and best of all..you can sometimes even find some the books you are looking for available for free on the net.
google books
and archive.org are a few my fav places to surf. pop in the author and/or title, you may get a pleasant surprise.

I think I'll stick to looking for something a little more realistic...

Hi Roslyn, appreciate the offer! I'm just looking for anything I can get hold on the specific period of the Protectorate, but three months is a long time. Has it got anything on the Indenture betwee Edward V & the earl of Northumberland? May 10th 1483 I think (...there might have been two).
No hassles! Thanks anyway

no problem..there are several references..so it could take me a while to scan the pages for the info.
there is also a url that i posted a few months back regarding e5 and his offical documents. perhaps annette has easy access to it. i'd have to scrounge for it.
i know it is either a google book or in archive.org
it is blasting hot here today. so i may get done fairly fast with coronation book look up. i can't finish siding the house or split stack the wood in this heat so i might as well bounce about some pages in a book..:-)

i think i found what you wanted. here it is verbatim.
page 17 coronation
...10 may
...An indenture was made between Edward V and the Earl of Northumberland for the office of the warden of the East and Middle Marches for five months..note 36
note 36. See R.L.Storey, English Officers of State, 1399-1485, BIHR,31 (1958), 86. Grants, 2, 19-20. The Earl was, of course, still in the north. He was continued in this office under Richard III, CPR 1476-85, 462.
since that was so quick..i'll see if i can dig up the url for the grants of e5.

you may be able to find it online, or perhaps with worldcat. it's catalogue of the assorted libraries around the world, and their holdings. good luck..there might be a copy in a university or public library near you.

...10 may
...An indenture was made between Edward V and the Earl of Northumberland for the office of the warden of the East and Middle Marches for five months..note 36

Annette- THANKS.
Re: that source, for any others who want details on the London records, here's a .pdf of the London Met. Archives pamphlet on their collections:

Thanks again!
