Leicester dig
Leicester dig
2012-09-12 03:15:07
According to the BBC there will be a news conference tomorrow at 11am (GMT+1) as they have found human remains (?) near the high altar?
Excuse me posting this if it is already common knowledge - I haven't been to the Society's web-site yet but it seems to be breaking news on the Leicester University site as well.
It is rather unnerving - I wonder if they have found him, after all these years?

Jessica,
I have seen that as well. I have mixed feelings about it. In some regards, I would like to see him in a tomb befitting his rank, and then on the other hand, I would like to see him buried either in York where he himself had wished (but that would mean Anne's body should be moved - call me sentimental) or at Westminster. It seems unfair, but many people were buried in Gray Friars and not just in the 15th century so it can be anyone.
I have seen the photo that was posted here, but it is also posted from Leicester University as well.

If, indeed, they have discovered something, I'm assuming they have more reason to be optimistic than just the presence of bones, which would hardly be a surprising find in and around a church. Possibly evidence of battlefield trauma, which I think is something they were looking for?
Anyway, I guess we'll find out later.

I'm not sure of those of you abroad will be able to play the clip but but this is fantastic
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-19561018
If it really is Richard (and it would be the most bizarre and unbelievable coincidence if it was someone else), he must have worked SO hard to overcome the scoliosis and become the renowned fighter that he was.

Those were my thoughts. It's hard to imagine that it could be anyone
else given the preliminary findings, so I'm hopeful. At the same time,
I don't want to be *too* hopeful in case it's not Richard (as long a
shot as that seems right now.)

This is the most extraordinary and exciting news. It is strange to think that so many questions about Richard's appearance and physical condition may now be answered.
And it will be wonderful if he does receive an honourable burial.
The news about the battle injuries and scoliosis is fascinating. A member of my family has scoliosis. In their case, it is barely noticeable.
I'm eager to hear more...now we wait!

I've always believed Richard had scoliosis, because I too have it. Right shoulder higher than the left. In my case not too noticeable, but it gets worse when I am tired. Definitely not a deformity. I am so hopeful they have found King Richard.

It has to be Richard doesnt it? I feel so relieved it is ridiculous.....I have often felt so sad that his mortal remains were beneath a car park. That shouldnt happen to anyone....
And now it can be demonstrated how these stupid stories, i.e. his remains being thrown into the River Soar by a mob, can circulate and believed for many, many years....
I think this discovery is the beginning of the end of the lies that have been spread and believed by so many over the years...
Massive, massive thank yous to all involved in getting the bones of our King found recovered so he can be re-buried with the respect he deserves....Eileen

As I recall it, Catherine the Great also had scoliosis, as a child, and had
to wear an uncomfortable brace for several years. A description of her as
a young woman said she was slender but not limber, or a word to that
effect. I assumed it was a result of the scoliosis and the treatment.

Oh I do hope so! I still - being the pessimist I am - can't help feeling it is too good to be true.
Regardless of the final result though, I have to second Eileen's thanks to everyone involved in this dig.

It sounds as though the TV programme is now a must. What chance of getting Richard Armitage to do the narration and thereby ensure the Tudor/Shakespeare viewpoint is treated as it deserves ?
"A second set of human remains (disarticulated, female) was found in what is believed to be the presbytery."
A little surprising, perhaps ? Anyone have any theories who they might be ?

It sounds as though the TV programme is now a must. What chance of getting Richard Armitage to do the narration and thereby ensure the Tudor/Shakespeare viewpoint is treated as it deserves ?
"A second set of human remains (disarticulated, female) was found in what is believed to be the presbytery."
A little surprising, perhaps ? Anyone have any theories who they might be ?

Apologies for being slightly of topic but just read Usain Bolt actually has scoliosis and it certainly hasn't hampered him.
Felt rather sad when I heard of the trauma to the skull, it made his horrific death more real.
