Shakespeare wants Richard to stay in Leicester--really!
Shakespeare wants Richard to stay in Leicester--really!
2012-10-19 22:49:27
A citizen of Leicester named Roy Shakespeare(!) has set up a petition to keep Richard's remains in Leicester, claiming (among other things) that York already receives enough tourism and revenue and "American ladies are treating Richard III like Justin Bieber." Of course, these remarks don't appear in the petition, which states that the bones should remain where they were originally buried. Ironically, Mr. Shakespeare claims that his wife's name is Margaret Tudor. You can read the article at
http://www.hinckleytimes.net/news-in-hinckley/local-news/hinckley-news/2012/10/18/hinckley-pensioner-launches-bid-to-keep-king-richard-iii-s-bones-in-leicester-105367-32050674/
and the petition at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/39708
The petition itself is no surprise as a reaction against the similar petition for a York burial, but the names Shakespeare and Tudor are so surprising that I would think that the article was a joke had it appeared on April 1 rather than yesterday.
Mr. Shakespeare is described as a "Hinckley pensioner." I'm guessing that means he lives in the (Leicestershire?) town of Hinckley on an old age pension (he's 68) or a retirement pension.
I'm American, and we don't use the term "pensioner."

Hi, Carol!
I also saw this article and forwarded it earlier today but for some reason
it never made it to the list, so I'm glad you have sent it. And I also made
mention of the names "Shakespeare" and "Tudor," which appear prominently in
the article. And I said something about Mr. Shakespeare being a pensioner,
because I love the term. I am a dual US/Canadian citizen but my husband was
Canadian to the core - and also btw, devoted to the British Crown - and at
one time he was "skip" (or head) of a curling (think shuffleboard on ice)
team who called themselves the "Chelsea Pensioners." Who, if you pay
attention to some of the ceremonies like the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, in
their British incarnation are retired soldiers who reside at the Chelsea
Hospital in London and wear a distinctive scarlet jacket, tricorn hats, and
their service medals on ceremonial occasions. I have even been known to
refer to myself from time to time as a "pensioner." :-)

I wish people would calm down and stop all this until the results from the University are published and we know exactly what and who we are dealing with! Though my gut feeling is that it is King Richard's remains that have been found, we owe the poor man some respect and should not be arguing and barracking until the investigation is finished. And even then I think it would be showing a marked lack of respect.

Though my gut feeling is that it is King Richard's remains that have been found, we owe the poor man some respect and should not be arguing and barracking until the investigation is finished.
