Aiden Turner looks too Latin for me, ( I live in Texas, so I know&) and kind of too "pretty". I think Ryan Gosling is a better somewhat English type, although tall, this could be corrected in the filming&camera angles&etc&.

Yes but I'll still watch it - at least at the start to see how awful it is and how long I can stand it before I start shouting "that isn't right!" at the tv.
Some good name sin the cast though and I suspect like "The Tudors" there will be 1 or 2 good performances among the dross - at least from some of these people

Carol (T) notes:
True, but he's dark-haired and dark-eyed. I think the casting reflects the idea that Richard was "the dark one in a fair family," which is widespread even in pro-Ricardian literature. Yet his portraits (admittedly not contemporary) show him to have had brown hair, gray or blue-gray eyes, and fair skin (the Croyland Chronicler makes a point of his paleness at one point). His hair in the paired miniatures is almost the same shade as Edward's (whose eyes appear to be light brown in contrast to Richard's blue-gray ones). Richard's skin in the restored portraits is almost colorless as opposed to Edward's more natural pinkish tone.
At any rate, I think that the darkness of his hair (and coloring in general) has been exaggerated along with his shortness to exaggerate the differences between him and his brothers, especially Edward, whose blond hair, if we accept the portrait as accurate, seems to have turned brown as he aged. (That would hardly be surprising; it happens to lots of people, including me. If only my hair were still the color it was when I was twenty! then, again, it wouldn't look natural.)

They need some Shakespearean actors/actresses....There is plenty of new talent at RADA at this very moment....and The Hollow Crown, shown recently on tv here in England had some marvellous performances...Julie Waters and Maxine Peak spring to mind....Not one jot of Botox or any trout pouts in sight. It needs character actors/actresses not pretty faces. Eileen

Why Shakespearean? I would think that such actors would be too attached to Shakespeare's depiction of Richard to have any interest in playing the historical Richard. (Can you picture Kenneth Branagh, not quite 52, in the role? He'd want the hunchback and the famous lines and the whole regalia--but at least he wouldn't want the story set in an imaginary Fascist England!) I do agree that a historically accurate film would need character actors (preferably of the right age IMO), not pretty faces, but in a Phillipa Gregory novel turned TV series, you can't have anything else, unfortunately.
Regarding Aidan (not Aiden) Turner, I made my previous remarks on coloring thinking that he had actually been cast for the role. I should have applied them to the "Duke of York," Aneurism, um, Aneurin Turner. (By the way, I posted to the IMDb message board about the "Duke of York" error, for all the good it will do.)
If someone *did* cast Aidan Turner as Richard (despite coloring, height, etc.), at least we'd have another Tolkien connection--he plays Kili in "The Hobbit."
Almost forgot to ask. Eileen, what is a "trout pout"?

Lol...A trout pout is what ladies get when they have had their lips injected with chemicals (silicone?) and suchlike to get enlarged and pouty lips...When they have also been botoxed to within an inch of their lives so they can no longer move a muscle in their faces they all begin to look alike and no longer look like themselves. Of course this means they cannot really act but they still continue to do so....The actresses sporting this look are too numerous to go into here...
Re Shakespearean actors...they can and do play other roles very well. At the very least you need someone who can act their socks off and that does not always go along with having a pretty face...You may indeed have a point when you say "with a Gregory novel turned into a tv series you cannot help it"...You know what? I think Im going to give it a miss...I dont even know if they will get the costumes right and that will completely do me in ....Eileen

So what period does this cover - does it go all the way up to Bosworth? Surely not, given characters missing from the given list:
Henry VI
Margaret of Anjou
Edward, Prince of Wales
Henry Beaufort, Duke of Somerset
John Howard, Duke of Norfolk
Henry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham
(the Henry Stafford listed is, presumably, the uncle of the 2nd Duke; that is the chap married to Margaret Beaufort. He was born c1425.)
Henry Holland, Duke of Exeter & his wife Anne of York
Elizabeth's sons Thomas & Richard Grey
Elizabeth's children by Edward!
John Neville, Lord Montagu
The brothers Stanley
Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland
Isabel Neville
William Neville, Lord Fauconberg
William, Lord Hastings
John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln
John de Vere, Earl of Oxford
Oh, and, err, Henry Tudor
All of these would need to be included to portray even the most basic of political events - or is this going to be just a girly soap opera?
My guess is that this season ends in 1471. But even so, where is the Lancastrian royal family?
Richard's Spanish ancestry was through Isabella of Castille:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabella_of_Castile,_Duchess_of_York
In the Olivier movie everyone is too old for the parts - Edward IV must be at least 70, and "Jane Shore" wouldn't be much of a looker in an old folks home.

My thoughts too David. Also thought that it was odd that she had included Margaret Beaufort as one of the women and not Margaret of Anjou. In my humble opinion she played a much bigger part in the Yorkist story than Margaret Beaufort, who while she was always around didn't become a prominent part of the story until 1483. Though I am sure she was always plotting in the background.
I have not read any of PGs books but I believe one is about EW another about Jacquetta and the last two about MB and Anne Neville so I suppose it will be yet again not the full story and a mish mash of all the books. How they are going to tell it without all the people on your list and with Anne marrying Richard of York I don't know.

Apparently PG is personally overlooking the screen writing....To tell Anne's story they have to talk about Edward of Lancaster. PG's third book has a sizable portion on Margaret of Anjou... I am not sure what is happening here!! I just "liked" PG's facebook page and hopefully can glean some info on the series from there.....
