Finally, someone in just a few words, wrapped up a great description of Richard`s personality, and WHY we all support him, to this day! Hats off to Johanne, her comment should be carved in stone!

Hi Liz...another 'in a nutshell'...does anyone think that Richard ever stood a cat's chance in Hell after the death of Edward left such a sorry mess?...combine that with the wickedness/deviousness of the main characters involved in plotting against him...you all know why they are and the sheer avarice/ingratitude of certain nobles begs the question...could Richard ever have survived? Carol responds:
I doubt that he would have survived as Protector (Edward V would have wanted revenge for Uncle Anthony when he came to power), but he might have survived as king if he hadn't made that charge at Bosworth. If only he could have persuaded Northumberland to do his part--or arrested him and put someone else in his place--if any of Northumberland's men could have led them.
Setting aside his handling of Margaret Beaufort, Morton, et al. (No, I don't think that he should have killed a woman or a priest, but he should have kept them from all communication with Tudor), the main problem seems to me to be that he didn't have any generals to match the Earl of Oxford (whom Edward should have executed for treason at least two times over).
Imagine if the Earl of Northumberland had been John Neville rather than Henry Percy. (What is it with these Henrys--Percy, Tudor, Buckingham--the name is cursed!) But then, the whole history of England from Barnet forward would have been different if Edward had never alienated John Neville (and had kept Henry Percy in the Tower).
The problems of a medieval English king or protector really put mine as an ordinary American into perspective!
