Character encoding on this board

I've noticed that apostrophes in some people's posts are showing up as l' (rather like swearing in a cartoon). I believe that's because those people are composing their posts as Word documents and then sending them as e-mail messages. May I suggest turning off so-called "smart quotes" (curly quotes) if you compose your posts in Word? That might solve the problem.

More computer-savvy group members, please feel free to correct me.

Carol

Yes, it's bloody annoying and I wish it were that simple.  It's fine when composing via a computer (though various email programs and web interfaces have their own idiosyncrasies).  The issue always occurs when I post using the web browser on my phone or my iPad, and there's nothing to turn on or off to get rid of the problem (and it's only Yahoo that's affected).

Would it work to post directly from the site rather than by e-mail, or is that possible from an iPhone? (I'm not up on the latest technology--I don't even text--and my cell phone isn't Internet enabled. I'm of the old school that thinks a telephone is for phone calls! <Smile>

If that doesn't solve the problem, maybe someone could report it to the Yahoos--I mean the people who run Yahoo.

Dear all,

Some odd things are happening with mine, with long dashes and
ellipses, but I'm replying in my email programme, not in Word. I
think it may be because I'm on a Mac.

best wishes,
Marianne

It's happening with some of mine but not all and I am doing them all in the same thing.  I am on a PC not a Mac so who knows?

Maybe it's the e-mail program? I'm not sure why people prefer to post from their e-mail rather than from the website, which doesn't cause font glitches. I don't want my e-mail clogged with all those messages, which I would have to file or delete, and since I have the site bookmarked and filed under Richard III, it's easy to come here every day. Just a thought.

Because some of us get the list as a digest.

For me it is difficult to put a networked 22 inch monitor in my back pocket while out and about so I use my I phone and hope the spelling autocorrects do not make me look like more of a idiot.it is a shame that autocorrect does not have a 15th cent function as it is it can be challenging as an Yorkshireman living in the USA and joining in a very lively debate
Apologies to all and any English majors!

Speaking as an English major, no apologies required.  I understand about glitches and tired heads/fingers, so I try to rope it in a thousand on the proofreading front when online.

Cheers,
Sheffe
