R 3 Society's Statement re the re-interment of Richard
R 3 Society's Statement re the re-interment of Richard
2012-10-29 16:28:47
Hi Everyone
Following the discussion in Parliament last week, the subsequent
statement issued by Helen Grant MP, the article by the Daily Mail and
today the announcement by the BBC regarding the reburial of the
'Greyfriar's Warrior' should he be Richard, the Richard III Society have
issued the following statement.
*********
Richard III and the Leicester dig are back in the news in the UK today
with speculation rife once again over where the remains should be
re-interred if they are found to be those of Richard.
In the event that the recently excavated remains are found to be those
of Richard III, we should emphasise that the Society is not adopting any
stance on their future re-interment. Indeed, the whole matter will be
taken out of the hands of anyone involved in the project at present.
Consultation on the disposal of remains was made at a fairly early stage
of the project and the advice given was that they would be handed over
to the Ministry of Justice, who would decide where and how the remains
should be re-interred.
We have received various suggestions about where he should be
re-interred, including York Minster, Westminster, Fotheringhay and
Middleham; these are all interesting and have valid points but are not
likely to be forthcoming. At the same time it should be remembered
that, had there been a cathedral in Leicester in 1485, it is almost
certainly where Richard would have been buried. Furthermore, Leicester
City Council have put up some of the funding, along with Leicester
University.
However, just to reiterate, that as far as we understand the decision
will be taken by the Home Office, through the Ministry of Justice.

Jacqui, thank you for this. But no reply to this post yet?
I looked for it on the website, and the facebook page, but couldn't find it. I hope you don't mind if I post this on other sites - spreading the information is the idea, I guess. ;-)
