Bury Richard in Gloucester?

Bury Richard in Gloucester?

Here's a new idea--not York, not Leicester, not Westminster, not Woksop, but Gloucester:

http://www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk/Richard-III-s-remains-interred-Gloucester/story-17208449-detail/story.html

At least, reporters, novelists, and TV producers might stop calling him "Richard of York"!

Fotheringay would be better as nearer the scene of death and known as the Yorkist Church and is very moving when visited and would enhance a place that has all but disappeared despite some famous or infamous dwellers at the ruined fortress? Coral

Yes the castle is ruined but about 15 years ago the church was standing and was a lovely tribute to the yorkists I would be very sad if it is no longer there as I was very moved there by the experience and it isn't far from Leicester. I visited the Sherrif Hutton church and paid tribute but now understand the prince isn't there. Do we know where he is? Sorry for my lack of knowledge but hope you can help. Coral a novice

The church at Fotheringhay is still very much there. The Society has a Carol service there every December. I have not been for a few years but I don't think that Richard and Edward's family have been removed either. It is a very lovely church and I will never forget the first time we went to the Carol service, driving away in the dark and seeing the chuch floodlit and all the rest of the village in darkness. To use an expression normally associated with the young, it was awesome.

Regards

Mary

Sorry Coral...It is a mystery where Prince Edward is buried. I did post a message with the places that Richard visited immediately after Edward's death where he could have been buried. Once Richard had left Nottingham he visited Pontefract, York, Middleham, Barnard Castle, Newcastle, Durham, Rievaulx, Scarborough Castle, Sheriff Hutton and York again. It has been suggested Edward was buried at Merevale Abbey which is close to Middleham. It's such a shame the location has been lost isnt it? Eileen

Devasting. But there is a monument in the old Church where flowers are left. So it at is somewhere to pay your respects until more is known. Take care. Coral

One more very good reason why he should be buried in York, reunited with
his family.

George...who? Have we got our wires crossed here? Paul was saying that the 'York tomb" which contains Cecily Neville the Rose of Raby and her husband Richard of York, is in the church next to the remains of Fotheringhay Castle. Their son Edmund who was killed with his father at Wakefield lies with them too.

I wish they would hurry up with the test results now.....It has seemed an age since we had the marvellous news that they have in all likeliness found Richard....

P.s. another thing...say something to make me laugh will ya? :0)

Name confusion. The tomb at Fotheringay contains members of the York line. It's not a tomb at the city York.

Richard Dukeof York ,Cecily his wife and Edmond their son are all buried at Fotheringhay. It,is a beautiful church although R of York's body is now outside since the church is smaller than it was. When we rectraced his funeral procession from Pontefract 17 years after he died we ended up with a service in Fotheringhay church.Richard Duke of Gloucester was there, the church was packed and it was very moving.Fotherinhay is in northamptonshire

Thank you Carole...So Richard of York's body is now buried outside the church. Does it have some kind of monument...? It seems a shame he is no longer with Cecily...Is Edmond inside the church...Is he near his mother? Many thanks Eileen

Er his mother father and one of his elder brothers are buried in Fotheringhay, and his wife in Westmointsre. So none of his family are in York!
Or were you being facetious? :-)

Maybe Prince Edward is buried in York.

Or then again maybe not.
