Apologies if this has been posted before; I can't keep up with the emails.
Blog post on the Telegraph re: "Let's give Richard III one last, glorious summer."
http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/danhodges/100181096/damn-it-lets-give-richard-iii-one-last-glorious-summer/
As an aside, I haven't seen Olivier's Richard in at least a decade. I tried watching today and burst out laughing and had to stop. I know it's disrespectful, and Vivien Leigh will likely come to me in my dreams intending to claw out my eyes, but the character feels like nothing more than a caricature now.
In 1984, I saw an RSC version of Richard III in Stratford with Brian Blessed playing George. I can't remember who played Richard, but I wasn't laughing then. So what's happened, what's wrong with me? I mean, it's Olivier, right?

My goodness your memory is playing you tricks! Brian Blessed was Hastings to Antony Sher's wonderful Richard on crutches! Best I've ever seen.

My personal favourite version of Shakespeare:

Anthony Sher also provided the voice of Richard in this animated version:

Carol responds:
It's funny, but I can't bring myself to enjoy any version of Shakespeare's play because of all the harm it's done to Richard's reputation even though another part of me should be glad that such a brilliant piece of dramatic literature is still providing so much enjoyment more than four hundred years after it was written. My grandson can't forgive Shakespeare for killing off Romeo and Juliet; I can't forgive him for immortalizing a monster in place of a man.
Give me the Horrible Histories Richard any day, though he doesn't take Shakespeare to task for nearly enough offenses. If you're not familiar with Horrible Histories, you can glimpse him here in the kings and queens song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4x0K2Y7kPw
Here, he has his own song (they make him a bit effeminate, but it's still fairly accurate yet funny:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6JczvS1PL4
And here his ghost tells off Shakespeare, if not for quite enough inaccuracies and the bit about badgers is just silly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxTim7fJLis&feature=endscreen&NR=1
Anyway, they're fun to watch whenever I feel "badgered" by the Tudor version of history, and it's nice to know that the kids who watch the program will meet this Richard before they encounter Shakespeare's.

Don't forget the hatchet job he did on Macbeth too, who doesn't get the attention Richard does.
King of Scotland for 20 years, loved and respected. Duncan killed in battle. Macbeth so popular he was able to go on pilgrimage to Rome for two years and came back to a peaceful happy country. His successor who killed him in battle, Malcolm was an absolute horror, much more like the Macbeth of the play.

Yes, Macbeth is actually more deserving of Scottish hero status than Le Brus. In many ways he was the last native king of Scotland, as Malcolm was thoroughly Anglicised, and came to power with the help of a largely English army. This in turn opened up the door to the Norman takeover of Scotland, which was ultimately so thorough that the nobility who fought Edward I's invasion were as Norman as the "English" invaders. Indeed most of them (Bruces, Baliols, Stuarts, Comyns etc.) were descendants of Norman families long settled in England.
