(OT) Problem replying to messages
(OT) Problem replying to messages

I know that at least one other person has had problems replying to messages lately. You type up your response, hit Reply, and Yahoo says, "Cannot retrieve message so and so," the message you're replying to. For what it's worth, I went to their help site and described the problem. Let's hope they deal with it during the scheduled upgrade on November 18 if not before.

We should just move to a bulletin-board forum. Much more civilised, this is cretinous software both in its user interaction and friendliness (lack thereof).
Yahoo is lame.

Carol responds:
Definition of "Yahoo" (from Merriam-Webster Online):
"1 capitalized : a member of a race of brutes in Swift's Gulliver's Travels who have the form and all the vices of humans
"2 <snip> a boorish, crass, or stupid person"
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/yahoo
Don't know what the originators of Yahoo were thinking by giving themselves such a name, but they were certainly prescient!
BTW, we tried Google groups for awhile, but it was even worse.

I download messages to my e-mail client and have no problem replying. I
have arranged the filters so that each list I'm on downloads to its own
folder, so that I can read e-mails at my convenience.
I have a life as well, and can't cope with bulletin boards.
So if this list goes to a bulletin board, I for one won't go with it.
Best wishes

Here is a free, full-featured bulletin board provider that I've used for years for something entirely unrelated to R3:
http://www.invisionfree.com/
Might be worth a look if disgruntlement with Yahoo turns to a determination to change.
[GRATUITOUS DISCLAIMER: I'm not associated with invisionfree; just a happy user of their board services.]

Carol responds:
Funny--I can't cope with Yahoo Groups messages coming to my Inbox, even as digests! I like to read them on the site (at my convenience), which is very easy since I have the site bookmarked (at the top of a folder labeled "Richard III").
Oh, well. We both like the group as it is, if only Yahoo would fix the occasional glitches. I've noticed people who post from their e-mail having occasional problems, too.
I'm not sure how well a bulletin-board format would work, but if it threaded better and allowed us to quote the person we're responding to without a long tail of old posts, it might be an improvement. On the other hand, it might not work well for the long posts that some of us like to write.

I think any type of set up we go with will have problems; that's
certainly been the case with other sites I'm onpeople leaving Groups
for Live Journal because it was the new "in" thing, now people leaving
Live Journal for Dreamwidth because LJ is becoming too much like
tumblr, people leaving tumblr for something else. So in this, I'm with
Christine. I'm just not going to keep chasing my interests all over
the internet.

I also agree all Forums are very similar unless you work from behind your own network and website.
I have used live meeting and Skype both have there limitations as well as faults
In my opinion it's probably best to stay with the devil you know etc.
