A thief has got into the Tower and stolen a bunch of keys. They have had
to change several locks - including a drawbridge!

The radio news report said that the Beefeaters saw what was going on but
couldn't leave their posts, and their radio calls for help were ignored.

So if he was running off with the Crown Jewels, does that mean they would have still stayed at their posts and let him do it?  Sounds to me as if a bit of initiative might be called for occasionally rather than just blindly following orders

The last time I was visiting the Tower the Yeomen of the Guard consisted of rather portly retired distinguished soldiers and they are trained to do precisely what they do, show people around the Tower ( adding little bits of history to make it more interesting or gory) and shouting at HM Guards when locking up the gates ( probably the oldest kept tradition) i.e. who goes there ? Queen Elizabeth's Keys etc. The security detail is done by both HM Guards ( it was a Coldstream battalion when I visited) and Met Police

As far as the more valuable items they are in a secure vault and if I remember correctly not even James Bond could get in, however there are always loop holes in every security system and if you read the article they had keys ( inside job) to a restaurant where they could probably steal frozen cheeseburgers and chips

I rest peacefully in my bed knowing that the jewels and all the treasure are safe!
