Another article, also on the DNA testing and reconstruction rather than the dig. First paragraph warning: it uses the Tudor propaganda. The article also contains a link as to the testing schedule by the University of Leicester which is fascinating.

Dear Wednesday -

Thank you bunches for posting these links! Though I must say that I find
calling Richard "the humpbacked king," with not a reference to a shred of a
doubt about that appellation, cringeworthy.

That said, those two articles and the link to the blog with Richard
Buckley's description of the scientific processes to be used on the remains,
is the most substantial material that I've seen published in quite a while.
For the past couple of months the reports have been mostly a rehash of the
news conference of Sept. 12, 2012. So this is good to see - although it
sounds from the tone like we won't even get the results in December, but
rather sometime in the new year.

You know what Archie Bunker used to say, "Patience is a virgin!" <smile>

Hi, again -

Since I was irked with the stereotypical view expressed in McStravick's
article, I decided to comment. Here is what I wrote:

"The characterization of King Richard III as a "humpbacked king" is not
borne out by contemporary evidence, even that of Richard's critics.
Furthermore, the historical record suggests a man of moral rectitude,
governing justly in the Northern part of the country (away from the
corruption of the court), who rather than manipulating events to gain power,
was rather taken by surprise and assumed the crown more from a sense of duty
and obligation than from ambition. Of course, we can't know for sure what
the truth was about Richard, but at least the opinions expressed should note
some caveats about the conclusions drawn, which seem to have their source
primiarily in Shakespeare's charismatic sociopath rather than in the
historical figure of Richard."

I hope it will turn McStravick's mind, and others who may read the article,
to the fact that there may be another side of the story.

Hi Eileen - yes we had a jaunt around Leicester (!) The beautiful, if
somewhat small cathedral & there was a small exhibition opposite the
entrance with an explanation about the dig & a few stone artifacts of the
monastery were on display... The statue of Richard in the Castle grounds.
Bosworth of course & much hilarity trying to find 'the real field'! Which
is obviously not marked for tourists as the poor farmer is trying to carry
out his business!
Our little 'bonus' was where we stayed - at Abbey Farm B&B in Atherstone,
with views across a lake to Merevale (pronounced 'Merryvale!) Hall. The B&B
is an old stone farmhouse which is on the site of the ruins of the old
Merevale Abbey - where Henry (Weasel!) VII stayed before Bosworth...
They've had all sorts of 'Ricardian' folks stay there so it was lovely
chatting to the owners & there is a darling church next door, where H(W)
VII was supposed to have donated a stained glass window as thanks for
letting him & his men stay at the Abbey & maybe this is why they think it
survived the reformation. There are a few stained glass windows but the
curator was not around so not sure which one it is...

Saving the pennies for the next trip - which I hope will be in the Spring,
but depends on the men in white coats!!

Glad you enjoyed your stay Lisa...and your visit to Leicester. Have they filled the dig in yet...? In a way it seems a shame but they people will be wanting their parking space back...Lol.Yes...I know what you mean about the battlefield. To get really close to the actual part where they now believe Richard fell you have to out of the Battle Centre and on to private land.... That poor farmer...still...he is very lucky in some ways.

Have not made it to Merevale...or Sutton Cheney Church....Maybe next year;

But for sure my next port of call will be Fotheringhey Church where Richard's parents are buried.

Do hope you can get back next year....hopefully by then they will have identiified the remains as Richard and he will be re-buried somewhere where Ricardians can pay their respects....

Yes I hope if all goes to plan there will be a meet of the R3 Members after
the Service if possible...It will be good to put names to faces. If you get
to the Bosworth area - see if you can get to Dadlington Church - which is
where they think some of the Bosworth fallen were buried. We passed it but
it looked too 'modern' & we were in a flap to find The Field! So I think I
missed out...

Fotheringhay Church is very beautiful - I love the walkway leading to it...
& there are charming villages with 'odd' names, in the vicinity. We came
across one near Leicester called Newton Unthank - isnt that marvellous!!

May see you next year!

I don't writes it, I just cringe along with you and reports it. :)

I think DNA done properly can take six months or more on the regular track, so they're insisting we'll get results in December is really pushing it. I hope they can do it, but finding the markers takes time. Given that they're working with ancient DNA, it probably takes even more time to do it right. They can't afford to make any mistakes with him, can they?

There's always what I say as a graphic artist when someone dances in front of me with a late project and wants it yesterday: "If you want it really badly, that's how it's going to turn out."

What I want to know is...once they reconstruct him on the computer, could they do a CGI version of him smiling so we'd know what that would look like?

Relevant to nothing to do with this post, a friend of mine remarked the other day that the youngest in a family is usually The Peacemaker, running about trying to smooth over arguments, nastinesses, and generally trying to smooth the way. "There. Now we're family." I immediately thought of Richard, who seems to have done this a lot with his brothers...and tried hard to do so with others as well. Even Northumberland.
