I was startled to read in an old National Geographic article on the Tower that the first execution in the Tower was Hastings'.

Is that true?

And Henry, whose (un)timely demise we've just been discussing?

I guess maybe the status of Clarence's and Henry's "executions" isn't as
clear as that of Hastings.

Hi All - Found this nice timetable via Google:

http://www.capitalpunishmentuk.org/tower.html

According to this, the first execution at the Tower was in 1388.

Carol responds;

The other day, I accidentally called him Henry VII. Now you've called him Henry IV. Poor Henry VI. He was so inept that we can't even get his number right!

Carol responds:

Or maybe whoever is counting the executions is only counting beheadings.

Carol responds:

Thanks, Maria. Very useful table. But note the "crime" for which the creator of the table thinks that Hastings was beheaded. Somehow, I think he died for something more than or other than "supporting Edward V at the council table"!

Strictly speaking Tower Hill is not in the Tower of London..Tower Hill is an area completely outside the Tower......The executions actually in the Tower were usually on Tower Green...Except for Clarence whose execution was in private and presumably therefore inside the Tower. Eileen

This is fascinating, not only for the punishments but also to show at a glance just how many people the Tudors in particular got rid of.   56 compared to a total of 15 during both Edward and Richard's reigns.

What about Fisher, and Anne Boleyn's brothers?
Or are we talking actually inside the walls where only the privileged few could enjoy the entertainment?
