Hi, All -

I probably paid too much for this, but it said this used copy was "Like
new."

I got it today, and there's no dust jacket. Now the fine print description,
at the end, may have said "no dust jacket," but I think that is
contradictory to the description in the big, bold print that it's in Like
New condition. What do you think? Should I complain? Do you think they would
give me a partial refund on the price?

Dust jackets are important to value. I would complain. "Like new" should mean just that.

Oh dear...Did you buy it off Amazon...because if you return something to them because it is faulty then they refund the postage as well.

Even Amazon dealers have to be careful if they havent described something correctly...

Hope you sort it out to your satisfaction because I love this book....Eileen

Hi, Katy & Judy -

Ok, I got a nice response from the seller of *Under the Hog.* He says I'm
welcome to send the book back for a full refund - but that that edition did
not have a dust jacket. That's possible. Although it has a citation for the
original publisher, E.P.Dutton, it has the imprint of the Richard III
Society, Inc. in New Orleans, La. on the verso of the title page. So I may
keep it - although it's just a reprint - the copies that I saw on Amazon
were quite a bit more expensive and not in as good condition. I guess
there's demand for this book, because it's out of print.

I told the seller I'd think about it for a day or two but most likely at
this point I will keep it.

I did tell him, though, that I thought it would be helpful if he had
specifically stated in his blurb that this edition was not issued with a
dust jacket. That would have saved a bit of kerfuffle.

Yes, such a note would have been very helpful. It's true some books don't have dust jackets. The Red edition of Lord of the Rings is a case in point. Also, I have a couple of illustrated novels by Audrey Neffenegger, who also wrote Time Traveler's Wife. These other books are oversized and the covers are velvety. These sorts of books are also sometimes issued in box cases, which provide much more protection than a dust jacket. If you own rare books, it's not a bad idea to construct your own boxes from foamcore, covered with nice paper or even fabric. Just be sure to measure carefully and leave a little extra room for where the covering wraps inward.

OT Collectible books (was RE: *Under the Hog* by Patrick Carleton)

That's a great idea, Judy!

The hardback edition of *The Daughter of Time* that I bought in September (I also bought the same edition as the paperback that I first read in 1970, for sentimental reasons) is not especially valuable, being part of a mystery series issued years after the book was originally published, but it's a nice book. I don't have too many books that would be inherently valuable except for my collection of Bela Lugosi and classic horror books. I think I mentioned before I paid $1000 Cdn. for the original Conan hardback books and $225.00 for the first full-length bio of Bela Lugosi, written by Arthur Lennig. The other books that may have some value are the special editions that my mother got in the 1940's a beautiful edition of Omar Kayyam, Edgar Allen Poe with creepy woodblock print illustrations, and *Wuthering Heights* and *Jane Eyre* with woodblock prints by the same artist. I don't much like them but they are striking.

Some of the Ricardian books, by the time I indulge in everything I want to acquire, might have some collectible value like the *Book of Hours* and the *Coronation of RIII,* for example.

BTW, I was drooling when you described your books, Judy! I wonder if any of the Ricardian libraries would be interested in a bequest some day in the far, far, distant future

Hi, Katy -

I think there was; other copies for sale have dust jackets. I emailed the
seller with a complaint about the point and told them they can either give
me a partial credit or I am willing to return the book for a full refund.

We shall see what they say!

I'd complain. If it had a dust jacket when it was new, it should have one
when it's "like new."

my collection will probably go to my kids, or the local public library. i figure i can influence a small corner of my world. interlibrary loans would also be possible too. thereby possibly giving a wider audience to richard iii.

I'll probably donate those to the R3 Library, as they'll benefit the greater number of people.
