Francis Viscount Lovell's banner
Francis Viscount Lovell's banner

Hi, All -
I just uploaded Paul Trevor Bale's graphic of Lovell's banner to the
Yahoogroups website. If you log in, you can view it in the second
Miscellaneous folder (the one that has six photos in it) on the second page
of folders in the Photos section.
Looks like it features a hound and padlocks!

Carol responds:
Thanks, Johanne. That fits with what we've seen so far on the heraldic emblem or crest (that dog, I just realized, has a crown for a collar, so it had to have been adopted--or adapted--while Richard was king, and I can certainly see how it could have been twisted by mutual enemies into "the king's spaniel," etc.).
But can someone help me with the motto, "tempus omnia monstrat"--"Time *points out* all things"? What could that mean? "Time makes all things clear"? If so, how sadly ironic and untrue that motto is with regard to both Lovell and Richard.

Hi, Carol -
I thought, "Time reveals all things" - thinking that it's Lovell's version
of Bacon's saying, "Truth is the
Daughter of Time." Another fitting book title for a Ricardian book, perhaps.

I last took (or used) Latin when dinosaurs ruled the earth, but could "truth is the daughter of time" have come from such a mottyo? Not directly, of course.

Carol responds:
Thanks, Johanne. If only time would hurry up with those revelations! I still think it's an ironic motto since Lovell himself is an enigma. At least, we should finally start finding out a bit more about Richard soon.

Hi, Carol -
I have a really good feeling about the information that we're going to get
from the analysis.
One of the most recent articles quoted Philippa Langley, I believe, as
saying they have already found out some things that will be surprising.
Will Richard's remains be the first royal remains ever subjected to such a
rigorous scientific analysis?
Perhaps it may set a precedent for testing on other remains, particularly
some bones that were placed in a certain urn . . .
