Flooding in England and Wales

Hi, All -

I hear that there have been record-breaking amounts of rain in Southwest
England and into Wales. My thoughts are with the Brits on this list - I hope
everyone has managed to stay safe and dry!

Ah thanks Johanne....No flooding in my village, yet, but unable to go for any walks...fields under water, very very muddy and danger of trees coming down.

Poor Old Tewkesbury under water again, the Abbey standing defiant and dry...but battlefield area looks like as if it is under water.

River Avon in Stratford very full and very angry looking...

Lol....am getting cabin fever......Eileen

Horrible, isn't it, Eileen? We're in Yorkshire and the 2007 floods were very bad - the main road out of the village was impassable. It's not that bad yet, although the river is very high.

Poor old Tewkesbury. I do hope everyone survives safely, and with minimal damage.

Weren't most of the dead after a battle like Tewkebury buried in mass graves
right on the battlefield?

And, if that is the case, might they find human remains (and possibly
artifacts) exposed by the flooding?

I wonder if that might happen at other sites besides Tewkesbury that are
flooding.

Hi Katherine..the trouble is that the the ground is so sodden from rain we've had all over the summer that there is nowhere for it to go....Lets hope it has reached its peak.

Just seen on the news that it is terrible in Wales...How awful to see the water rushing towards your home and nothing you can do about it. There was a lot of cat rescuing going on.....:0)

Though it can happen in the case of a shallow burial, it is unlikely to occur in this area as taken the age of the site and the fact that this is not the first time the area has flooded over 500 years the mass burial site is probably several feet down with alluvia also covering over it bringing it even deeper.
In an area were there is flowing water, erosion can reveal burial sites , however some material tends to migrate and conditions such as this could assist in the discovery.
WW1 sites in N France / Belgium will reveal bone fragments and metallic objects as lots of the casualties were not buried but killed in shell burst or similar trauma leaving little in the way of remains.

My thoughts go out, as well, to our British friends. The climate is worsening in so many places.... Good friends of mine did the Tewkesbury fair, this year, and had they not prepared for the worst, their costumes (which they also sell) would have been ruined. Many other vendors were less fortunate....

Venice is currently a mess, and I've heard the River Arno through Florence is threatening many towns and villages. I visited Florence, years ago, and met a young British art student who was present when the great Cimabue crucifix was dragged from the mud, irreparably damaged. He said he wept.

Judy...I find it a tad ironic that for the last few years we have been inundated with advice from gardening programmes/articles etc., that we should all be planting our gardens with cacti and other such draught resistant plants because of ever increasing hot summers....sardonic laugh...that will be the day that night here in the UK....Eileen

Sadly, it's the middle of the US that will need to be planting buffalo grass and cacti. The aquafer beneath western Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, and the Oklahoma panhandle has only about 20 good years left....

Carol responds:

Just make sure they don't plant *buffelgrass*, which has invaded Southern Arizona, strangling the native plants and creating a terrible fire hazard.

Like you, we could use some of that rain that's uselessly accumulating and harmfully in the UK. Why can't it go where it's needed and wanted?

With apologies for the completely OT post!
