There is a September entry on YOUTUBE from a Marie who went to Middleham and recorded a male voice replying to her comments&"Loyaty"&She is an ardent Richardian. Since I come from an extremely documented haunted city&San Antonio, and my parents home was very haunted by a young soldier in vintage costume, I firmly believe in such things. Since we are discussing non traditional issues, why don't we go all the way? There are legitimate investigative teams with EVP recorders who could do a more thorough assessment of Middleham. We don't need to make a big public issue of such a move, since Richardians are already ridiculed enough. But any such investigation can simply add to all the efforts currently made, surrounding the Leister find. What are some opinions. By the way, the voice at Middleham is very pleasant! Carol D.

In 1985, I went to Sheriff Hutton, with the intention of spending the day
roaming the castle ruins and St. Helens. Since I don't drive (let everyone
give thanks for that!), I caught the rare bus from York to Sheriff Hutton.
The sunshine disappeared as soon as the bus doors closed; the ruins were
creepy, the cows in the corner wouldn't talk to me, and as I stood in the
rain, I swear I felt something. It scared me so much I never made it to St.
Helens and spent the four hours till the next bus in the bus shelter
reading (the pub was closed and it was the only building in view except for
a gas station).

(Similarly, but much less scarily, a fellow Anne Bronte-ite and I felt a
lovely reaction to our reading aloud of an Anne Bronte poem at the location
where she wrote it. It was, again preceded by a change in the weather).

It wasn't malevolent but it sure wasn't friendly, and I'm betting that, *if*
it was anyone, it likely wasn't Richard: at that time Sheriff Hutton
wasn't a very popular visiting spot, it belonged to a farmer (who was very
lovely, and very surprised to see me wandering around the area), and definitely
not set up for Ricardians; so I'd guess if it was Richard, he would have
been happier to see me than this presence was.

A few years later, I attended a Bronte seminar focused on Anne Bronte and
located in Scarborough, where Anne died and is buried. Her grave is within
running distance of the remains of the castle, which has Ricardian echoes.
The guide told me one evening about an international festival a few
years earlier,
at the castle, with an international gathering and many costumes. At one
point a Dutch visitor asked her how to get to the top wall. You
can't: theruins don't allow it. When the guide explained
this, the Dutch visitor said he saw a young man in fifteenth century costume
on the wall. The guide took it with a few grains of salt, but wondered if
it wasn't Richard enjoying the party.

I once sat on a ghost in an antique Jacobean chair. I didn't mean to, and I didn't know he was there until I was in the chair. I wasn't thinking of ghosts at all, but immediately felt this heavy male presence surrounding me. I felt really stupid asking the chair's owner, "Is this chair haunted?"

When she said yes, I apologized out loud. A wave of amusement rolled over me then, and then I felt the tightest, warmest hug surrounding me. It felt like sinking down into warm bath water. I've no idea who he was, but he was sure friendly.

So if you encounter Richard, you might just ask him for a hug. Or...um...to clasp arms or something.

It's often hard to know when a ghost is there until it lets you know....
Also, it's my experience that, if you go hunting for the ghost, you'll
seldom make contact. It's when you're self is kind of not focused there
that it comes. Maybe conscious concentration is a barrier in and of itself?
I had Bosworth all to myself one early morning in that 1985 year, and I
wandered around begging for Richard (or Norfolk, or even the Stanleys) to
make an impression. No go. It took the frazzilization and insecurity of
Sheriff Hutton to call someone out.

And we weren't looking for Anne Bronte at Thorp Green, either, when
the windand tone of the air changed.
But we had spent the entire day doused in history -- first part of the day
at Middleham, in fact, though my friend wasn't interested in Richard; but
Middleham and Thorp Green aren't far, if you can drive, and he ended up
enjoying Middleham. Then we spent a good six hours Bronte-ing, so I guess
we had set ourselves up just right!

I have an otherwise sane-seeming friend who swears she saw Richard when she was just 11 years old. She turned around because she felt as if "someone" was watching her, and there he sat in a chair in her parlor. His face, she says, was bloody. He startled her but did not inspire fear. She says he looked "sad" and didn't speak...yet she suddenly experienced a feeling of warmth and caring, but as soon as she tried to talk with him, he vanished. At that time, her knowledge of King Richard was limited to Black Adder reruns - that sort of thing - and she went to the library to try to make sense of it all.

Since someone cracked the door on this sidebar topic, I'll take the opportunity to share an interesting chain of events that took place during my undergrad years. (By way of Prologue: I've been a steadfast Ricardian since reading Tey in 1971.)
When I began my college career in 1983 as a "returning adult" student, my first course was Western Civilization I. The professor was very formal & reserved; not a stellar lecturer, but nothing about the man seemed likely to evoke strong emotions of any kind.
And yet, every time I looked at Dr. G___ I was overcome with rage. Not dislike, distaste, or anger; blind rage. As if that weren't bizarre enough, when I was in close proximity to the man I swear I could "hear" the clang of metal on metal and "feel" a horse move beneath me and the sensation of swinging my arm back to deliver a sword or mace blow to someone just below me.
I couldn't imagine what in the world was prompting these feelings/ hallucinations so I just ignored them and completed the class, although I did wonder why this soft-spoken academic provoked such an inexplicably violent response in me. Until I had occasion to visit the History Department for the first time.
As I walked past my former professor's office, I spotted it: the key to understanding--if not exactly explaining--my violent reaction to a man I barely knew. There, displayed proudly in the middle of Dr. G's door, was a poster-sized portrait of Henry VII!
I offer this experience not to prove anything or create controversy; consider it a strange-but-true tale to help pass the time while we await DNA results.
Cheers to all,
Jennifer Ford, PhD

Replying to Judy Thompson&.Marie who summoned up the spirit didn't say it was Richards ghost, and she was at Middleham&.anyone having been there will recognize the spot. The audio portion has the lades autistic child being very loud, and I thought someone needs to carefully record this tape, edit out the yelling child, and enhance the male voice saying Loyalty. It is on YOUTUBE under the heading&..The Spirit of Richard III says Loyalty.

The audio portion has the lades autistic child being very loud, and I thought someone needs to carefully record this tape, edit out the yelling child, and enhance the male voice saying Loyalty. It is on YOUTUBE under the heading…..The Spirit of Richard III says Loyalty.

I think I'd ask Ghost!Anne's permission first if you plan to do that. <EG>

If you put earphones on, you'll likely hear the voice at :21. A baritone obligingly rough-whispers "loyalty" when the child isn't vocalizing.

She was seated in her home, and she wasn't sure at first, just a "gut" feeling, which is why she did some research at the library. Of course, I can only accept what she says she believes...but she did immediately draw a picture. A man in armour with long dark hair. I've seen her drawing.

How did she know it was Richard - and where was she?

I have an otherwise sane-seeming friend who swears she saw Richard when she was just 11 years old. She turned around because she felt as if "someone" was watching her, and there he sat in a chair in her parlor. His face, she says, was bloody. He startled her but did not inspire fear. She says he looked "sad" and didn't speak...yet she suddenly experienced a feeling of warmth and caring, but as soon as she tried to talk with him, he vanished. At that time, her knowledge of King Richard was limited to Black Adder reruns - that sort of thing - and she went to the library to try to make sense of it all.
