I have just started reading Thomas Penn's Winter King. Of course some of the early chapters are painful for a Ricardian, but I have been surprised by the lack of Richard bashing outside of the facts of the rumours spread by Tudor agents.
The book is very well researched and written, and I get the feeling that the author doesn't much like his subject, while admiring his tough skin, and ability to survive against the mountainous odds. Fiercely intelligent, always suspicious, and absolutely ruthless, something Richard never was. Unlike Richard Henry was totally lacking in charisma, which the widespread celebrations on news of his death go to prove.
I'm a slow reader and have a lot of other things taking up my time, but when there is something else to report on in the book, I will try and do so.

Man oh man! Tudor has been called a financial genius! Yes, a genius at extortion! I've been reading this book. The old system. Was to be destroyed in favor of absolute rule by Henry. Henry in his little privy chamber totting up his account books and keeping detailed enemies lists. Lists of people he could accuse of infractions if the law and then harass until they turned their money over.     He died of TB. I hope some of the spores from Anne's illness were still in Westminster and he got it there! What a complete crud bomb!   Arthur died of the sweating sickness which Catherine of Aragon contracted but survived.  William Brandon is openly accused of raping an old gentlewoman and then her daughter. His son Charles was evidently a chip off the old block. Lot's of juicy stuff in this book.

Thomas Penn did a very good television programmed on it Karen. It's well worth watching if you can get it over there. He was, I think, the first person to talk on television about the foreign invasion of 1485. H

I doubt I can find that. I'll look on Netflix. It's funny the book is titled the dawn of Tudor England, which is true, but it's more like sunset. This then was the end of divided power and the beginning of absolute monarchs.

If you get UKTV on your satellite system over there you might pick it up as a repeat. It's been on more than once. H
