Middleham Castle - as it was?
Middleham Castle - as it was?
2012-12-07 16:21:27
I recently purchased and watched the Middleham Castle: A Royal Residence DVD written and presented by John L. Fox. I found mine on Amazon; he also has them on his website at loyaltybindsme.com.
This is the only tour of Middleham Castle I could find that presents the castle as it is now, and as it was in the 15th century -- through computer graphics that are wonderful but go by far too fast. (The Pause button is my new friend.) I'd recommend the DVD to anyone who wants to see Middleham in all its glory and have the ruins explained if you live 6,000 miles away and can't get there, but it's left me greedy for more.
Can anyone recommend a book or website, other DVDs, or other sources that show Middleham as it was in the 15th century? Or another castle similar to Middleham that's still intact?
Thanks so much.

I'll second those lovely castles plus Chirk Castle in North Wales (close
to my original home) http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/chirk-castle/ which
was completed in 1310 - probably one of the smaller castles, like
Middleham...

But I do so love the ruins...Kenilworth...Wow!...Bodium, Farleigh Hungerford, where Isobel Neville gave birth to Margaret, wonderful chapel there still with lead coffins in, last but not least Ludlow....the stairs are still there that led into the Royal Apartments were where young Edward would have spent his days and also where Prince Arthur died...and that massive gateway that they rode through..still there....How lucky we are that we can get so close to these places where all this amazing stuff too place and walk in the same places. I never cease to get a kick out of it....Eileen

I love Chirk. I discovered when researching my family history that a great-great grandfather of mine was the forester there from 1840s to 1880s. AND Richard owned it for a few years (swapped it with Stanley for Skipton before the French expedition).

Re: Middleham Castle - as it was?

I haven't checked it (no point as my flash player = crap) but doesn't the Middleham "official" website have a walk-through virtual tour or something? Or am I imagining that?

I wholeheartedly endorse Wednesday's recommendation! The Foxes have made a
similar (and technically better) video about Sandal Castle.

I recently purchased and watched the Middleham Castle: A Royal Residence DVD
written and presented by John L. Fox. I found mine on Amazon; he also has
them on his website at loyaltybindsme.com.
This is the only tour of Middleham Castle I could find that presents the

all its glory and have the ruins explained if you live 6,000 miles away and
can't get there, but it's left me greedy for more.
Can anyone recommend a book or website, other DVDs, or other sources that
show Middleham as it was in the 15th century? Or another castle similar to
Middleham that's still intact?
Thanks so much.
