Dunno about John Morton; but I was at school with a fella called Henry Staffords (with an 's'!!! lol)... not that it's relevant, but he came out as gay some years back and I couldn't help thinking, 'that's Katherine Woodville for ya'!!!

Hi, I was 12 years old when I saw Olivier as Richard and thought this man is interesting. I read all I could find and just new Richard was not what some made him out to be.
Richard has been with me ever since, God Bless him. I would never desert him.

Hi everyone.I joined months ago,and have never had the courage to post.I read everything that everyone writes, and have learnt so much.My 'Richard moment' was at the age of 13 (Im 42 now!). In a history class,we had to defend or prosecute Richard for his perceived crimes.I was the only one out of a class of 30ish that defended him.Ive being doing the same ever since. I think you're all brilliant. Can't wait til they reveal that the Leicester skeleton is Richard, more publicity for the best king we ever had,and more chance to get the real Richard out there, and stick it to the tudors!!(small t on purpose)!!Karen Raynor.

Sometimes I think: Maybe I lived before. And maybe I knew some of you (and others of my acquaintance, who have similar feelings). It's weird, almost silly-sounding, but I've been obsessed with things of the late 15th C. since I was in grammar school. "Finding" Richard was a bit like putting a name and place to an already-existing Something, which even my family found inexplicable.
I know. Go ahead with the jokes....

I think for me it's about the injustice of it all, pure and simple. I'm interested in the medieval era generally but I don't for example get as bothered about Henry II, Edward III etc as I do about Richard.

Yes. The injustice surely!
The tragic death of someone so young and brave is always heartbreaking. Look at how we feel about princess D. Or Marylyn Monroe! And for me mostly Jesus Christ.

Re: You know you're a Ricardian when....

I've been obsessed with one other person, a Victorian author. This led to my publishing bits on him and meeting his grandson, which was fun.
What wasn't fun was being subjected to the author's rabid/possessive professors who made it 100% more about them than about the author. I ran away after the man's 'civilian' fans proved more sane than his devoted dons. I'm still devoted to the author; I just can't handle some of his fans.
Researching the author's family helped me resolve a number of issues I was having with someone in my life at the time, so there were present-time payoffs for playing in the past. I found these answers in a labyrinthine way that felt like this man was reaching out from the Unseen level to guide me on the Seen level.
As for why we feel the way we do about R3...maybe we all knew him somewhere, somehow? Maybe we all agreed to remember him here? Intuition is sometimes so much stronger than logic, there's just nothing for it but to go where the river of feeling takes you. Some say all minds are connected through all time and all space, so there's one theory for you.
Caroline Myss has a theory that when you meet someone you resonate with, it's because they hold pieces of yourself that you've lost or left behind along the way. Your job is to retrieve those pieces and integrate them again. So, theoretically, a person might be drawn to Richard because someone they trusted betrayed or abandoned them in a moment of need and pieces of trust were left behind.
That theory is all well and good, and I can see its merits, but my interest in Richard seems a little more complex than that. On the other hand, if I had to summarize how the kid inside me feels when I think of him, it comes out, "It's not fair!" regardless the adult me knows life isn't fair to any of us.

>
>
>
>

Mmm, but Jesus was 40 at the Crucifiction, hardly a young man in the 1st century. And he didn't die on the cross anyway...

Yes. The injustice surely!
The tragic death of someone so young and brave is always heartbreaking. Look at how we feel about princess D. Or Marylyn Monroe! And for me mostly Jesus Christ.

OT - Jesus (was RE: You know you're a Ricardian when....)
2012-12-09 20:06:26
There is no doubt that Jesus lived; we have more proof of his existence from
near-contemporary accounts than we have for many ancient personages. You can
say he didn't die on the cross, but the fact is that the disciples were
disheartened and scattered - Peter denied Jesus, remember - until the
resurrection. So something happened that caused the disciples to be willing
to endure persecution and even martyrs' deaths.
The accounts say that it was verified that he was dead when his body was
taken down and placed in the tomb. And a guard was posted, to make sure the
disciples didn't come and steal the body.
BTW, there are non-Christian statements that Jesus was condemned and
executed as a criminal by the Romans.
The teachings and sayings of Jesus were carefully preserved and recorded, so
regardless of whether you believe in the "mythos" of Jesus, you can at least
believe in what he taught. For one thing, the Greatest Commandment. And for
another thing, that he came not to replace the Law but to fulfill it.
That's all - I really don't have time . . . as I mentioned before.
Loyaulte me lie,
Johanne

near-contemporary accounts than we have for many ancient personages. You can
say he didn't die on the cross, but the fact is that the disciples were
disheartened and scattered - Peter denied Jesus, remember - until the
resurrection.

Re: OT - Jesus (was RE: You know you're a Ricardian when....)
2012-12-09 20:42:29
Most historians agree that Jesus was born about 6 or 7BC, and the Crucifiction was in 33AD, so 40 is the correct age.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birth_of_Jesus#Date_of_birth
It took people several days to die on the cross; the whole point of the method was that it was a slow, long death by strangulation. Jesus was up there for no more than 5 or 6 hours. You'll remember that the other men crucified had to have their legs broken so they'd suffocate - there's no indication this was done to Jesus.
This was done so that the men wouldn't be on the cross during the Sabbath - against Jewish law - and shows that Pilate colluded to ensure the crucifictions were done on a Friday - the day before the Jewish Sabbath (Sunday is the day people worshiped - the Sun).
Jesus was given a drug - hyssop, which can induce coma - while on the cross, and "breathed his last" immediately thereafter. The fact that the wound inflicted on him later by the Centurian "bled copiously" shows that Jesus's heart must still have been beating. Henvce, the miraculous recovery.

Subject: OT - Jesus (was RE: You know you're a Ricardian when....)
Loyaulte me lie,
Johanne

No David not historians, as there is no evidence a man called Jesus ever lived. It is all a matter of faith.

You'll remember that the other men crucified had to have their legs broken so they'd suffocate - there's no indication this was done to Jesus.

No David not historians, as there is no evidence a man called Jesus ever lived. It is all a matter of faith.

You'll remember that the other men crucified had to have their legs broken so they'd suffocate - there's no indication this was done to Jesus.
