Richard's Scribes?

Richard's Scribes?

Is anything known about Richard's scribes? Those who served him when he was duke, or those who served when he was king?

Would he have "inherited" Edward's scribes, or brought his own to Westminster?

Carol responds:

Sorry for the delayed response. I don't know about scribes per se, but Richard's secretary both as Duke of Gloucester and king was John Kendall, who died with him at Bosworth.

Was there a family connection with Paul Murray Kendall by any chance? I wonder if at least the possibility may have been inspiration for PMK. I know it would for me!

Ah...there's a thought..I wonder if he traced his family tree?....I'm sure Mr Kendall must have felt absolutely chuffed that someone close to Richard who followed him to the death bore the same family name...I would be. I wonder where John Kendall was buried?

Kendall was an amazing man. I've often wondered why no one has written a novel through his eyes. Maire.

I'm pretty sure that the characters of Robert Bolman and Richard Bele - dramatised in Rhoda Edward's The Broken Sword were actual workers in Richard's office. Maire.

Hi
There was a book by Robert Harrington called The Killing of Richard III about a fictional character who was a clerk to John Kendall and featured Kendall. It's still available on Amazon although it is many years since I read it.

I may have beaten you to Amazon for the $1.33 edition! Because of the Christmas rush, the 4 RIII books I've ordered have been delayed by weeks. Grrrrr! Maire.

Carol responds:

Now that you mention it, I think there's a factual basis for the story that a lazy clerk was unfairly promoted over a hardworking one and that Richard found out and rectified the situation. I believe that those were the actual names. The incident may be depicted in P M. Kendall's biography of Richard. I can't think where else I might have read it (other than the fictionalized account in "The Broken Sword," which I had forgotten until you mentioned it).
