I have spent more time than I should reading Markham's book - thank you for the link! This has cleared some of the mystery in my mind but it opens new questions.

Margaret Beaufort. I have the impression that she was the 'push' behind Henry's ambitions. As I posted earlier, I can see some psychological implications in what I have read of her and in the actions of the Tudor king. Has her character (and her influence upon Henry's character) been dissected by analysis, or is there too little information?

Bishop Stillington is characterized as pious, which explains why - in that light - he would keep his word to Edward; and why, after Edward's death he spoke up. The information presented in Parliament, is that available or documented (other than a declaration of it being presented) or destroyed after the Tudor ascension?

The Princes. Has the idea of placing them into the confines of a monastery ever been raised? The time and circumstances would argue for it as an alternative to their deaths.

I'd spend more time searching JSTOR but I'm in the middle of Machiavelli right now - why do the Tudors keep dancing through my head?

Stephen Lark
Richard's Titulus Regius did survive - and quotes Stillington's testimony in a petition from summer 1483.

Merriann,

Welcome to the compulsion/obsession so many of us share when it comes to R3 and his circle. Resistance is futile; it's easier to simply join the dance in your head.
