Reading The Winter King the writer says of the death of Northumberland, giving it a twist I don't think I've come across before, saying that the Earl was attacked while trying to enforce taxes for Henry Tudor, AND THAT HIS RETAINERS, BLAMING HIM FOR NOT HELPING RICHARD AT BOSWORTH, DID NOTHING AND ALLOWED HIM TO BE KILLED.
This making the retainers do nothings I find rather interesting, as they would have been at Bosworth with him, and known what went on.
Now of course, this still doesn't mean Northumberland could have prevented Richard's defeat and death, but it makes it sound more likely than not.

This probably goes back to the 1470s, when Richard and Northumberland actively competed for power in northern England. Northumberland doubtless saw Richard as an interloper on his "country".
There may then have been many of Richard's former retainers (those who survived Bosworth) in Northumberland's retinue, as Richard's death would have released them from service, Northumberland being the obvious new employer.
