If the figure on the left with the green doublet is indeed a representation of Gloucester, then he was a sharp dresser:D

Hi Ishita,

There is a lovely blog by Susan Higginbottam on her website 22/8/2008 about this figure called 'Manly Matters'. Some have also claimed the figure is Hastings because it looks older and wears the Garter (I know R was a Garter knight too). From her comments you may prefer it to be Hastings!!! Hilary

Johanne Tournier
This photo came up for discussion a few months ago here, and after noting
that the guy on the left with the garter (and what looks like a big butt
<smile>) may be Hastings, the suggestion was made that the figure on the
right with the long brown robe may be Gloucester, as it seems to be a
younger figure (the faces are somewhat idealized, like most Gothic
manuscript illustration), and that gentleman also wears the Garter.

Johanne

Hilary, I could not find the post. How do I search for it? I tried to search it with the date but nothing came up. Isn't it terrible that I am at work but doing all these? Ah well, there is no customer here, so I guess I am okay.....

Let me try with the name of the painting on Susan's blog.

Carol responds:

But look at the face. That man is much older than Richard at the time of his death, let alone the time of the painting, and Richard was never known as a dandy. More likely, it's Hastings (also a Knight of the Garter). Compare this painting, where Richard (in blue, third from left) is dressed royally to match Edward IV and Prince Edward: http://www.luminarium.org/encyclopedia/anthonywoodville.htm

Hi Ishita,

So like me you fit it in between the work! If you do a Google on Susan Higginbotham and Waurin it should come up - it did for me but let's try a paste

http://www.susanhigginbotham.com/blog/posts/manly-matters/

It's my fault I spelt her wrongly. She's not always the most reverent - she's a great Neville fan (like Karen (and me!)) but she is very funny, especially when she talks about historical novels about Richard. I think she was one of the first to decry the Anne as a 'wimp' model. And my guess is she's done a fair bit more personal investigation about the period than PG.

Cheers Hilary
