Jackpot!

Dear Ricardians -
I finally got my long-awaited package of books (etc.) from the Society
yesterday.
Here's what I received (prices are in pounds):
Stock No. Description Price
1) 2 Itinerary of R3 fm 1483-85 4.00
2) 3 Good King Richard? 8.50
3) 12 R3: Crown & People13.00
4) 20 Battles of Barnet &
Tewkesbury 10.00
5) 99 Reburial of Richard, Duke of
York 4.00
6) 130 R3: Lordship, Loyalty, Law 13.00
7) 135 Festschrift (essays in honour of Anne F. Sutton)
7.50
8) 143 Royal Funerals of the House of
York at Windsor 5.00
9) 156 Boar Livery Lapel Badge 6.00
10)162 New Society Pendant 14.99
85.99
With shipping of thirty-seven pounds and the 5% surcharge for using PayPal,
the total came to a little more than 130 pounds.
OK, I can't afford it, but I figured it would be worth having these
wonderful volumes. So far I have to agree, having taken a quick look through
them last evening and am finding most of them are worth having just for the
unusual illustrations. For example, *The Royal Funerals of the House of York
and Windsor* has a line drawing of Westminster Abbey with an abbot's funeral
hearse of the 16th. century, the only known English depiction of such a
hearse. It was a very elaborate construction on which the body was placed,
which was wheeled around the church and placed before the high altar during
the funeral service, and topped by tier upon tier of lighted candelabras,
which must have constituted a huge fire hazard. Apparently something similar
would have been used for the funeral services of Edward IV and others during
the 15th. c.
Oh, and the other thing - they don't have pictures of most of the jewelry on
the website, so I tried to decide on a couple of pieces by a process of
elimination. I got the new design pendant, which has a boar standing on a
field of murrey with a blue background (very handsome!) and the boar lapel
pin - he's pewter but looks like silver, and I love him!
I found Susan and David Wells (the joint RIII secretaries who handle the
shipments) to be very conscientious - the books were meticulously wrapped in
bubble wrapped and arrived in spotless condition.
(BTW, P. W. Hammond's book *The Battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury* has a
picture of the bones of (alleged) George and Isabel in their glass case at
page 112.)
Loyaulte me lie,
Johanne

Read Jackpot and thought you'd won the lottery Marie, and were going to treat everyone to the books they want, and help me fund my film!
But no.
