Annette has authorized me to post the following paragraph:
"Announcements are expected imminently about the reburial and other topics which have been to a great extent decided by external authorities. Leicester University is expecting to announce the results of its scientific identification tests in the first week of February, so the hope is that the Channel 4 TV documentary will be timed to appear at the same time. I can also tell you, hand on heart, that to the best of my knowledge no one outside the university is in possession of knowledge of any such results. I honestly don't think the scientists have reached a conclusion yet, and if the dates of the announcement and the documentary are postponed again (which I think is not impossible), this will I hope serve to show that they are not finding it an easy job!"
She indicated that "the first week in February" (the tentative date provided by the university) probably means the week of February 4, not the preceding weekend and that the university has only stated its "intention" to make an announcement at that time rather than a firm commitment. She also says that filming for the documentary is still in progress.
So there's no real news yet, but it's coming soon (and she's as anxious to know the results as we are).
By the way, does anyone know how those of us in the U.S. can see the documentary? All I have access to is BBC America, which I take it is quite different from Channel 4.

Carol: This is soooooooo exciting - even if it's taking a long time. Thrilled that you can communicate Annette's words to us, Carol. Her book is possibly the best I've read about Richard. Maire.

Carol, Channel 4 is one of our commercial channels and nothing to do with the BBC which is paid for by a licence. Hopefully someone here can put the programme on youtube (I wouldn't have a clue how to do that.)
Thanks very much for posting that - and please thank Annette for keeping us informed.
I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed but still don't see how it could possibly be anyone but Richard.

Carol responds:
Hi, Eileen. I've already told her how much we miss (and need) her and asked her to return. I also mentioned that the problem we were all experiencing has been solved. She says that she hasn't necessarily dropped out of the forum permanently (she just got tired of all the bickering going on at that point), but right now, she's very busy keeping up a balancing act between the various groups involved in the Leicester project (the university, the city council, the Society, the media, etc.) She's also working on a revised version of "The Maligned King" that will incorporate the new findings. When things slow down, she might consider rejoining us.
Anyway, don't give up hope, but do give her some time. At least, she does know how we feel, and maybe she'll give us another shot when things get less hectic.

Re: News from Annette
2013-01-15 12:37:56
Thank you Carol...Hopefully in time then...as long as the Forum remains troublefree...fingers crossed...there is a chance Annette may return.....I have started to re-read Maligned King at a slower pace than when I read it the first time...just questions keep cropping up and I think where is Annette? An example from what I read last night Hastings knew EW from way back.....and yet I got the impression that when Edward 'bumped' into her it was the first meeting....

Thanks I have one already, one thing you did not mention was that you need lots of bandwidth ( cable or DSL) dial up modems will not work as you need either a J5 connection or wireless to your network.
Good luck with your chemo my wife is a

no Carol - it attaches to your TV. I should have called it an Apple TV box,
from Future shop or any electonic store..it connects to your internet so
you'd need high speed.

Hi, Eileen. Annette says that her revision will answer questions that readers may have rather than assuming that they have a thorough background knowledge, so maybe she'll cover that particular topic. I do know that Edward and Hastings were familiar with the Woodville/Grey family. If I recall correctly, while Edward was still Earl of March, they "rated" (taunted) Elizabeth Woodville's father and her brother Anthony as upstarts because her father, a mere knight, had presumed to marry Jacquetta, the dowager duchess of Bedford (widow of Henry V's younger brother, John Duke of Bedford). I don't recall the source of the story or whether Elizabeth Woodville Grey's husband, also a Lancastrian knight, was involved. He may already have been dead. At any rate, Edward was fully aware of the origins and loyalties of Elizabeth and her family when he "married" her.

Sorry to be dense, but I'm still at a loss here. I have cable TV but my Internet is DSL through the phone company. In other words, I do have so-called high-speed Internet, but it's connected to the phone, not the TV, so I have a feeling that whatever an Apple box is, it won't work for me.

No you're not - it can be quite confusing & there are so many
configurations. I think you'd need to get a wireless router - that plugs
into the phone line - then all your other devices (PC/Printer) run off the
router wirelessly - including the Apple TV box, which plugs into the back
of a TV one end & the router the other end. Your PC (if it has wireless
capability & most modern PCs are) will work off the router. The PC doesnt
need to be plugged into the phone line.

Well, I have an external modem that works as a router (my grandson's laptop and my Kindle both use the wireless) so I guess I could probably get the Apple TV box. Then again, I have an old TV, so maybe not. Thanks for your help. I'll check into it later--need to get back to work now!

Hello friends - As promised I am dropping you a line to update you on
Saturday's conference and I also have other news to impart, so here
goes. By the way, if anyone who still participates in the online forum
would like to copy and paste this to share with members, please feel
free (Paul???).
I do miss the 'cyberspatial' company of those whose online friendship I
enjoyed for so many years, but my workload has really been astronomical
over the past six months, and still I have two more talks to give
and three more articles to write this month, so not much chance to wind
down at the moment.
Anyway, as to the conference, although it was very big (nearly 500
attendees) I think the size was actually a positive factor because the
overwhelming majority of those present were Ricardians and
sympathisers, so an air of celebration pervaded and everyone was
extremely friendly. On the Friday evening we got a text from Richard
Buckley in London telling us that the magazine /Current Archaeology/ had
awarded the project their 'Dig of the Year', so Phil Stone was able to
announce that first thing.
I'm told the whole conference was videoed and will be posted on the RIII
Society's website for all to see, so I won't spoil it ahead of time -
but believe me there was some fascinating stuff. For me I think the
outstanding talks were Toby Capwell's item on how Richard's harness
would be likely to be adapted to accommodate his scoliosis, and Caroline
Wilkinson's eye-opening talk on her facial reconstruction work (just
wait till you see the climax at the end!). Knowing in advance what John
Ashdown-Hill and Mark Lansdale were going to say, the impact of their
talks on me was understandably less, but for many people I think theirs
may well have been the star turns. So it was a fabulous line-up. We have
Philippa Langley to thank, by the way, for involving the psychological
profiling/analysis team to bring their skills to bear on Richard III,
something that was intended to form part of her original concept for the
'Looking for Richard' documentary but which, like so much else, bit the
dust once C4 turned it into 'The King under the Car Park'.
Since so many conference speakers illustrated their talks so stunningly
with slides, Philippa and I felt we could have done better in that area,
so I apologise for that. Unfortunately her life has simply not been her
own, and she was still trying to source images right up to 24 hours
before I left home for Leicester! Our next task is to try to keep the
reburial on track, but at least (with any luck) this won't be conducted
under the glare of the media spotlight.
John told me that his revised edition of "Last Days" was Number Two in
the UK bestsellers list last week, and very well deserved too. Perhaps I
might be forgiven for mentioning that any minute now "Maligned King"
will also be reissued in an updated paperback edition, and happily the
publishers have actually increased the typeface size compared with the
current tiny font. Having been rather proud to be first to feature the
restored Society of Antiquaries portrait on my cover, I was hoping my
new edition might be the first book to feature colour plates of the
facial reconstruction, although I have a suspicion John may have beaten
me to it - I haven't had time to check yet!
At the same time I've twisted the arm of THP to bring out the revised
version in a limited ('commemorative') hardback edition - very few
copies, probably not more than 100, but I know a number of Ricardians
overseas would like to own it in hardback because they didn't get a
crack at the original hardback edition, so I hope there will be interest
in this. Anyone wanting to know more about price and availability is
welcome to contact me on my email address.
I think that's all for now, except to say that we are working hard to
get the authorities to proceed with the beautiful tomb whose design has
now been released, and that very soon it is planned for Richard to be
moved to a place of quiet seclusion and reverence to await his reburial
some time next year.
Best wishes
Annette
asked, and pass this on.

Oh, wow, I cannot wait to see the taped conference. I had not 'cottoned to" it that you were an actual part of this process, or that you were a respected author. I will be looking forward to all the new books and re-releases. I can imagine all involved in the scholarship and other aspects of the "find" are inundated with things to do. Thanks to all who are so wonderful to read, and have such knowledge.

announce that first thing.
Best wishes
Annette

Pamela, Annette Carson, who sent the message that Paul relayed, is a former member of this forum and the author of "Richard III: The Maligned King," one of the best recent books on Richard. If you have time, you can do a search of this forum for her very informative posts. She has told me that she may return at some point in the future, but obviously not while her workload is so heavy (or the volume of posts so large).
Annette was involved in the dig as an intermediary between the various groups but declined to participate in the documentary when it began to take a direction that she didn't approve of. I'm delighted that she appeared at the second press conference and is still working with Philippa Langley.

Thank you Miss Carol. I think you should write a book!!! Sorry, I tend to get my authorities mixed up, and am astonished when someone who is very much in the know posts. It is rather humbling. So, I shall search as directed, and am enjoying immensely your previous suggestions.
