Are we talking about what was also termed a hedgehog?
They demonstrated that in Braveheart -- nearly broke my
heart for those horses. Men standing shoulder to shoulder
take the pikes, set the butt ends against the ground, and
whip them up at the last minute so the horses impale themselves?
He'd have to go around, wouldn't he? It's pure suicide to
fling yourself and your horse onto those pikes unless you
hope that you'll get punted when your horse gets stabbed
and fly over the rest of them like Superman.

It would appear like suicide by today's standards, however there are many detailed reports of (forlorn hope)men doing similar acts of bravery, perhaps this is what separates a normal soldier from a Victoria Cross or Medal of Honor, total unselfish acts for his fellow man? It was a sure way to be recognized and gain immediate rank
I would suggest reading Sharp and his rise from Corporal to Lt. Col. during the Napoleonic wars. A series written by Bernard Cornwell
