Just tuned in to suffer - one should listen to all views - to note that it's being followed by ...... The Sixth Sense! Perhaps they have been tapping into us after all?! H

I put it on for about 5 seconds. I didn't intend to watch it anyway to be honest - I Am watching The Treasures of Ancient Rome (ancient history being my other big passion) instead, followed by Borgen.

Eileen, Liz,
You know sometimes suffering comes with a bonus. Starkey's programme wasn't a rehash of his bit on the the 'Three Brutal Brothers' in Monarchy - it was longer and much more detailed. Whilst he can't get his head round Richard he was actually sympathetic to ...Clarence, and he was very hard on the failure of H7. And Robinson, whilst bringing in Anne Sutton, the Society, Keith Dockray and Pollard concluded he could have murdered his nephews but only because he'd discovered E4 was illegitimate (in came Michael Jones). Dare I guess that they might be swinging, at least 20 degrees - and could this possibly be because it is indeed 'him' and they have to re-conder their television careers? I am cautiously optimistic... H

Off topic, but can someone tell me why when I reply from my home email (rather than the forum website) I get all these funny numbers and condensed spellings in the posts. I'm sure it's been asked a thousand times, so many apologies.

Now, now, now - he was even sitting round an 18th century table when he described 'this was how the Hastings meeting happened'! But ....he was 'making excuses' for the brave and loyal Richard's 'murders'. What do you think of Dockray who featured a lot?

Every time you mention Starkey, I think of Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey) and I hear a Beatles tune in the background. Sorry, of topic AGAIN!

I'll bet you anything that, like Stanley, they're leaving room to leap to either/every side of the fence after they've considered Monday's documentary and the public's reaction to it.

Re: The R3 Evening on More tonight

Hi
This is a reply to Hilary and Wednesday
Neither program was new; just a repeat. I think the Robinson program had a date of MMII. It was apparent that it was not new as it retold the tale of the despoiling of the monastery and the removal of Richard's remains, which does not seem to have been the case. I am wording that extremely cautiously as I hope will be confirmed on Monday. What Starkey and Robinson are guilty of is of course, mugging to the camera and playing for effect thereby not allowing the evidence to speak for itself. Furthermore, the omissions and insinuations together with the lack of dates to back up and provide a chronological timeline of events allowed Starkey in particular, and Robinson, the opportunity to practise their own versions of the dark arts of the propagandist. The omission of a clear timeline with substantiated facts and dates appeared deliberate in order to fudge issues and to reinterpret information according to the inclinations of the presenters as in both programs Starkey and Robinson are clearly more than just presenters.

Yahoo can't read curly quotes (so-called smart quotes) or curly apostrophes. I suspect that it can't read em dashes, either. I would stick with plain Times New Roman with no italics or fancy formatting. You could also try clicking View in your browser and making sure that character encoding is set on Western rather than Unicode. If none of that works, I don't know what to suggest other than posting from the website.

When I saw his performance on the 'Trial', I was surprised he went on to
have any kind of tv career at all. I do know that Tudor scholars (and
aficionados) rate him highly, but he just irritates me beyond belief.

Many thanks for this info, Jac, it's getting so exciting now - a Ricardian's Paradise! Everyone at the nursing home where I work will be watching, this is Richard's big chance. I do hope it is all positive.
Can't wait to see the facial construction, whoever would have though tthis would be happening??!!

Thanks so much for posting this! It is exciting! I was sure, after what I

You know, actually, I think it's because he's out of his comfort zone with Richard. I agree he was dreadful in the trial (saw the original) but his TV performances have improved a lot since then. He does bring a gravitas and 'talks to the screen' quite well, unlike TR who runs around like an important squirrel (I winced last night when he was handling R's books without gloves).
On reflection, what was interesting when S was talking of Clarence and said, as heir until 1470, he must have felt like Mary and Elizabeth when they were 'in the wings', he seemed on home ground; something he could relate to. He actually didn't seem to 'know' Richard well enough at all, that is until he died a very brave death, so he avoided him. You would have thought he was the bachelor brother. Once we were back to H7 he did a great 'disembowelling' job and an attack on MB as the 'mother-in-law from hell'.
Robinson on the other hand was at pains to say that Richard was a good guy and all kings took out the opposition (both had the Princes in the urn and murdered by Richard )- and R was the only one in the Tower on the night of HVI's death (there was a lot of More). However when TR started on Clarence choosing being suspended upside down in a vat of wine over hanging drawing and quartering it got more than silly. I still think both are keeping their careers open for a bit or revisionism.

Hi Elaine,
I have the original version of the Monarchy programme, but there was more in this (perhaps they were cuts from the original now put back in?). I don't think they are consciously into the dark arts but they are making programmes for people like my engineer husband, who wouldn't have know whether the WOTR was in 1450 or 1650 and who want a brief, easy to digest explanation. I agree Robinson was not new - it was revamped after the time of the Rouen discovery, TR said that. Perhaps we should rejoice that R is at last making the headlines - and that they are not totally beyond 'conversion'. I think the biggest contribution we can make is pressing for re-examination of the bones in the urn. They seem to be starting to concede on everthing else Hilary

The omission of a clear timeline with substantiated facts and dates appeared deliberate in order to fudge issues and to reinterpret information according to the inclinations of the presenters as in both
programs Starkey and Robinson are clearly more than just presenters.

This may surprise many but, having met Starkey, he is very polite and knowledgeable about his period. He answered my question about online sources.

Re: The R3 Evening on More tonight

I watched Starkey in the mock trial and thought his attitude extremely unprofessional. I then tried to watch one of his Monarchy episodes and ran away within fifteen minutes. His delivery puts me off as much as his unrepentant axe-grinding -- and why he should seem to absolutely loathe Richard is something I don't understand. What's he afraid of? Must Richard be painted solid black so his beloved Tudors can be preserved in alabaster?
Robinson...I watched his old "mystery of the princes" episode and thought his setup was clean (1/3 of the show). He presented the facts and proved he/his writers could do so. But when he got to R3's s behavior once E4 died, the facts were demolished as you've outlined below. I wouldn't mind his chewing the scenery if he didn't deliberately go off with the fairies as well.
