I was just on Amazon.co.uk looking for a book unconnected with Richard and though it was about time I read this, so had a look. The Kindle edition is £6.71 (I don't have one.) AS for real books, used copies start at £117 and there are two "new" copies, one at £253, the other at £529! This is bloody disgusting. They are really = pardon my French as the saying goes - taking the piss.
It would be cheaper for me to actually buy a Kindle and then get the book on that than to buy one of these. I can't tell you how appalled I am and I wonder how much (if anything ) of this exorbitant amount JAH will get? Presumably nothing from the used copies, and not much from the "new" ones.
Liz - who is disgusted at the way people are jumping on the bandwagon and making a fortune out of Richard now that everything is hotting up.

You can also download the Kindle (and Nook) programs onto your computer and
read there. If you have a Kindle as well, it can sync your positions in
the books you're reading.

I am a Luddite regarding Kindles. I like books, holding them, putting stickies on passages I want to remember, writing inscriptions for the grands when I give them books. Not so much fun with a "device"!

Liz, the Kindle will change your life! You can have all your books in one place without having them scattered all over. Can jump from book to book in less than a minute if you are trying to find a reference.....Awesome innovation!

Well that's an idea although I don't actually want a Kindle but it's better than buying those sharks for a "book" book

hough it was about time I read this, so had a look. The Kindle edition is £6.71 (I don't have one.) AS for real books, used copies17 and there are two "new" copies, one at £253, the other at £529! This is bloody disgusting. They are really = pardon my French as the saying goes - taking the piss.

And so it begins...Dickon is being reformed into a pop-culture icon even as we watch.
Parts of this are going to be fun. I hope. Think. Pray. The soaring book prices, not so much.
Wherever he is, I hope he's kept his a sense of humor. And irony.

Last week a book on Richard arrived from the UK. It smells like an old used bookstore, and the pages are curving/waving like parchment because they've come from a humid atmosphere into a dry desert one.
An ebook will never smell like that. Never do that.

Suggest that you get a old book and cut out the middle and replace it with your kindle that way you get the best of both world ( don't use a Gothenburg bible)

I would also be far from surprised if a new edition came out in a few
months. Perhaps his publishers are "holding" reprints, thereby not
satisfying the demand. John will be far from the only author in flux until
after Monday.

I hate the damn things but am beginning to think I may have to get one simply because I have run out of space for real books. Anything decent I will still buy in a proper copy.
Of course if I win the lottery I'll buy a five bed house (I live alone) and have four bedrooms full of books!

Suggest that you get a old book and cut out the middle and replace it with your kindle that way you get the best of both world ( don't use a Gothenburg bible)

We are "bookies", not the betting kind, the collecting kind. I think we shall make the Earth tip with all our accumulated books. On our first trip to London, we spent hours at an old book shop, and bought so many books we had to ship them back!

I hate the damn things but am beginning to think I may have to get one simply because I have run out of space for real books. Anything decent I will still buy in a proper copy.
Of course if I win the lottery I'll buy a five bed house (I live alone) and have four bedrooms full of books!

Read it years ago. Have the movie. Found an Irish bookseller who was pretty much the equivalent of Anthony Hopkins' equivalent, but can't afford the exchange rate/shipping/new book prices any more for my specialty.

I ordered my copy of the book from the German Amazon site - it cost me only 12 Euros plus 3 Euros to ship it to the UK.
I have a kindle, which i love for fiction but much prefer to read a proper, old fashioned format non-fiction book, if only so that I can flick back and forth through the genealogies/maps/etc etc.

And so it begins...Dickon is being reformed into a pop-culture icon even as we watch.
Parts of this are going to be fun. I hope. Think. Pray. The soaring book prices, not so much.
Wherever he is, I hope he's kept his a sense of humor. And irony.

Parts of this are going to be fun. I hope. Think. Pray. The soaring book prices, not so much.
Wherever he is, I hope he's kept his a sense of humor. And irony.

No one is suggesting the abolition of books just that it is probably easier to carry/store your books electronically this is not to detract from your ability to smell, feel, gloat etc over your library
However if you ever go on vacation the weight limit on planes may limit your options

Books with family trees, pictures, maps etc fare very badly on Kindle, at least, they do on my 'original' one. Maybe the latest models are better.

Would Richard have been shocked/annoyed at traders turning a big profit on him? I think not. He was as acquisitive and as keen to increase his wealth as any 15th century noble. In his case, of course, it was for land and the power and money it brought.

Sounds like that marvellous movie 84 Charing Cross Road about the American lady who developed a special friendship with a bookseller in London who got copies of nearly everything she ever asked him to get. Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft. A movie for all book lovers, or to be pretentious, bibliophiles!

So true, George & Ishita!
I filled my kindle in less than a year, but then I acquired a lot of the classic collections that are free, or almost so. What I've found is that when you fill the device (they say it will hold 3500 books), you can archive the surplus in the Cloud and retrieve them any time you wish.
Having gotten a recent book in .pdf format, I found that it's possible to transfer fm computer via USB cable, or, failing that, you can email the file to your individual kindle email address and then download it wirelessly. The kindle will display the .pdf file without the necessity of converting it. Very handy.
My big thing was finding a way to acquire a virtual library, as I moved from a 2600 sq. ft. residence to a 920 sq. ft. residence in 2011 and had to (tragically) leave many of my treasured books behind. L I will have to be completely disabled before I can't pick up my kindle! On the other hand, I have acquired many wonderful books on RIII from the Society and used book sellers that are in print format. I don't think a kindle will ever be able to match the thrill of handling a beautiful book. So, hopefully I'm good for a few years now and will be able to enjoy what I have (in virtual form and real form) before passing them on to the next person, who will, I hope, treasure them as much as I do!

No one is suggesting the abolition of books just that it is probably easier to carry/store your books electronically this is not to detract from your ability to smell, feel, gloat etc over your library
However if you ever go on vacation the weight limit on planes may limit your options

Hi, Pamela -
I think Richard held chivalry and piety as his highest ideals, not
acquisitiveness. And that much of Richard's seeming acquisitiveness was
Edward's desire to avoid benefitting Greedy George solely, when Richard had
done much more in reality to deserve endowment.
That's my belief anyway.

Would Richard have been shocked/annoyed at traders turning a big profit on
him? I think not. He was as acquisitive and as keen to increase his wealth
as any 15th century noble. In his case, of course, it was for land and the
power and money it brought.

I use amazon because they are quick and reliable and most of the stuff I want is a good price on there. I don't buy many rare books.
Thanks for this.

I have no idea why people use amazon - they are so expensive - always try
ebay & then if no good just do a google search...
Good luck

Hi Johanne - (it wasn't Pamela who posted the remark about Richard's acquisitiveness, it was Pat! )
I agree that Richard held his religion and chivalry in very high regard, but, as I read it, he WAS acquisitive, and rightly so for the time in which he lived. Perhaps the equivalent of a modern worker trying to get to the top, earn more, and benefit his family. Doesn't necessarily mean treading on everyone else

Hi, Pat (oops, sorry - you really should sign your emails!)
I don't disagree with what you're saying. I am no expert on this, one of the
most contentious issues surrounding Richard and the other Yorkists. But I
would think that they started out with nothing, or relatively little,
because the Lancasters had been in charge. Also, land and feudal service was
the traditional basis of wealth. So, I think it was kind of a quid pro quo
situation - they needed estates to get income in order, I suspect, to carry
out their responsibilities to Edward and the Crown. It does seem to me that
Richard acted responsibly by offering the Countess of Warwick, for instance,
a home, income, the means to live somewhat independently. I don't think
George acted anywhere near so honourably - and George certainly was greedy.
As I said, if one would feel that honourable service merited reward, which
certainly would have been true by the standards of the day, then George got
far more than he deserved, and Richard less. There are many instances, which
I could look up if I had time that indicate that Richard was relatively
modest and frugal. (Hungerford is an example, and also that he returned
donations given him by the towns he passed through, plus instead of forcing
gifts from his subjects to fund the government, he instituted for the first
time a system of repayable loans.) So - my conclusion is that Richard was
far less acquisitive - and a better money manager/administrator - than his
contemporaries, and in particular EIV.
Take care, got a paper to work on.

Since Richard hardly expected to ever BE the King, I would think he made an adjustment at a very early age, which became a life long habit. But then, I am, obviously, biased.

Lessee....perhaps he would have been amused and offered lodging, fishing, hunting, and horseriding at Middleham, along with a shop stuffed full of books he'd penned in his spare time about everything except himself, and all sorts of tourist goodies created by his villagers.
He, of course, would never mingle with the visitors, even when his signature flag indicated he was at home. His tour-guides, however, would share a bevy of unending, delightful tales about him but no one would know whether they were true. Every American tourist would have difficulty understanding the resident Yorkshire accents, and translators would offer to help...for a price.

Hi, Pamela -
I am sure Richard never expected to be king, especially as a youngster. He
would have had to be delusional, and he sure wasn't delusional. There is
evidence in his own handwriting to support the premise that he wanted to be
a noble knight. I am sure he compensated for his condition one way or
another in order to be able to perform the duties of a knight. The fact that
he was a capable and precocious youngster is shown by the fact of his
serving as a commissioner of array (I think it was) for a number of counties
when he was only 12 years old, as reported in Kendall, at a time when
George, 3 years older, got responsibility for raising no troops. "Poor
George," to quote the former Governor of Texas, speaking about a different
George, "He was born with a silver foot in his mouth!"
However, compensating is one thing; being able to completely conceal the
condition is another. Everyone who knew him was probably aware that he was a
"crookback," an expression which might well apply to a back twisted from
scoliosis as well as from kyphosis. But it was probably something that one
generally wouldn't talk about in polite company. Like the Habsburg monarch
in Thpain who lithped. (smile)
Mostly I believe that Richard was a remarkably enlightened monarch who would
have been an even more wonderful head of state had things turned out a bit
differently. Richard wasn't just a man of his time, imho, and his record
shows that he was ahead of his time in many ways - or, perhaps more
accurately, both behind and ahead of his time.

most contentious issues surrounding Richard and the other Yorkists. But I
would think that they started out with nothing, or relatively little,
because the Lancasters had been in charge.

Reminds me of Tetbury......not far from where Prince Charles lives. It has the most gorgious shop there...."Highgrove" with beautiful and tempting stuff. Thanks, Linda -
It is always nice to have some moral support! But there are a lot of people
here with more knowledge than I have, whom I respect a great deal. What I
have is sincere regard and affection for Richard, that makes me want to be
able to convey with some eloquence and insight what I do know about him. We
can all do our part, I think, in support of Richard's memory.

Loyaulte me lie,
Johanne

Johanne, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy reading your posts.
Always informative and more often than not matching my own feelings
about the matters at hand. I wish I had even half your knowledge, but I
am reading a great deal and learning a lot from you and the others who
post here. Thank you one and all.
Linda
