Hello Marie!

You wrote: Forgot to mention. During Society's York
research weekend I heard that apparently a pile
of documents relating to Edward IV have been found at
Berkeley Castle.

Don't know any details, I'm afraid. Has anyone else
heard about this?

No, but I'd like to know more. Who is reading these
documents? Will the results be published? Will they
be available on the web?

Were the documents from Edward IV's administration?
Or were they *about* Edward IV from a later time,
Tudor, for instance?

Where is Berkeley Castle, and why would documents
about Edward IV be stored there? Is it likely they
were moved to Berkeley Castle from somewhere else? Or
have they been there since the time they were written?

TIA!

Marion

Sorry, as I said, I really haven't any more details. Some of the
members who live in that ppart of the country had read about it in
the local press.

The Society paleography team is currently looking for a suitable
English language transcription project, so you never know!

I got the impression these were contemporary documents.

Berkeley Castle is in Gloucestershire. It belonged to the Berkeley
family. William Viscount Berkeley was co-heir with John Howard to the
Mowbray estates and so was created by Richard Earl of Nottingham. He
fought for Richard at Bosworth. However, there was another William
Berkeley, Sir W. B., who was involved in Buckingham's rebellion. I
don't know what the relationship between the two of them was.

I know the Berkeleys also had lands in the New Forest area
(Hampshire). To digress, one of their number from the 15th century, a
Maurice Berekeley, is said to have slain a dragon, no less, on Burley
Beacon down the road from where my Cull ancestors lived (at least,
that's where the Culls lived in the 18-19th century. Back before that
they were in Minstead, which was as it happens a Berkeley manor. They
too were fond of the name Maurice [and Richard, come to that]).

Without knowing what these documents are, it would be hard to say if
they had come to Berkeley from elsewhere.

I hope we'll hear more about it soon.

Bye,

Marie
