Massive headline on the DM front page saying "spinal curvature proves hunchback". Once you get into the actual article it is a bit better but can we all please comment on this and point out that it does NOT mean he had a hump?

I'm sick to death of this.

Jeremy Vine has just had a item about this on his show and not only mentioned 'hunchback' several times, but had some bod on reciting a dreadful piece of doggerel about all the people Richard had 'beheaded' en route to the throne.

ANd it still says "Support for the monarch was further diminished when Edward and his younger brother disappeared and Richard was involved in the death of his wife. "

Oh it's read by a bunch of idiots. Have you read some of the comments about the obvious typo of  the body being found "680 metres below the car park"?

There are some good pictures on there now of Richard remains - awful though.  His poor spine, it does look very severe.

Can you imagine the strength and determination it took the man to ride, to fight, to do all the rigorous things necessary during the time. And, it can be quite painful.

And the details show how the vertebrae grew unevenly. I am no expert for sure, but they did say the condition was idiopathic, Richard was over age 10 when it started; it was probably around the onset of puberty. And they did say that his build was unusually slender for a man's. I am thinking that the intensive training that he underwent, of necessity, would have at the least seriously aggravated the condition or possibly even caused it. Had he been dedicated to the Church from childhood, he may have been spared that affliction, or at least the worst effects of it.

It's terrible to think of how his body was treated. In the notes they say he didn't even have a shroud, let alone a coffin, which I find astounding. I wonder if he still had the noose around his neck . . . we will probably never know, but it certainly does seem that his hands were bound.

It's obvious he couldn't have been a hunchback!! The curve in the spine is sideways. Sheesh!

I do feel like I am mourning a member of my family who has just died.

Johanne

We also have to be realistic....Some people are never going to change their minds..Always ready to see baseness in people actions, always ready to attack. Maybe it makes them feel important for 5 minutes of their lives...You have to given them a wide berth and not allow them to bring you down.

I had an interesting chat with my neighbour today re Starkey. He is not a Ricardian by any way..his man is OliverCromwell...but he detests Starkey. He reckons possibly he has a chip on his shoulder. I think this can be said for a lot of people that would always choose to see the negativity in a person rather than the positive. I really, absolutely, as I said yesterday, have no time for them. Its very unfortunate that Dr Starkey gets so much media attention, as does Weir. But there you go...I suspect your mum told you that life was not fair. Today is a day for positivity...Eileen

Let's be positive. It DOES confirm von Popplau who said he had slender arms and legs and was taller than him. 5ft 8in was pretty tall for then. This has been dismissed in the past as VP being small. And, VP was one who did not believe the Princes were dead, I seem to recall?  Perhaps we should find a rep to shout about that?  H.

I wouldn't worry about Starkey - I think he did himself no good with the Jamie Oliver thing (everyone knows about that!) and he's making enough money out of the Tudors. The 'danger' will come from the Hicks and Weirs who will 'prey upon the ignorant'. Everyone loves a scandal - the Tudors knew that. A good guy is just ........ boring.

5'8" in not short. It is average height. If you keep comparing him with a robust 6.4 , he is going to come up short! If he had to wield those heavy arms and ride those war horses, he had to be very strong! What do they mean by very slender? He was definitely not a weakling!

Exactly - but doesn't Lady Hamilton add an extra dimension to Nelson, despite all his other claims to fame? Some like to pep things up. For their own gain of course. Nothing changes. Yep MB and Morton are still around in one form or another.  Twas ever going to be so.

Dear Hilary

Jo Appleby said that RIII would have been 5'8 tall if he hadn't had the scoliosis, but that with the scoliosis, he would have been significantly shorter than 5'8. It could have easily taken off 3-4, I believe.

I think Richard would have been truly heroic to overcome everything to be able to support his brother's claim to the throne by force of arms. Remember that most of the people commenting on these sites truly know nothing beyond Shakespeare and maybe Allison Weir. If they produce a great movie about Richard, that may be some help. Just think of the drip, drip, drip of water wearing away stone.

Hi Johanne,

5ft 4/5in was still reasonably tall for then and still is now - I was expecting more like 5ft/5ft 2in - my ancestor when he joined the navy in 1855 was 5ft 2in. (I only had the ITV news blog so didn't know about the height reduction). I suppose what I'm really saying is that if Von Popplau was right about one thing he could be right about another, which was the survival of the Princes. I agree entirely about the dripping....... You are so right, Paul! It's quite a contrast with Richard's respectful and
possibly even reverential treatment of Henry VI's remains, reburying him at
Windsor after Edward IV's death.

The sensitive and perceptive will always be drawn to find out the truth
about Richard in my view. And the others are not worth worrying about!

A man can be slender and strong...Its known as being wiry....couple that with determination and you have got someone who can achieve as much as a bigger and taller man. Eileen On 4 Feb 2013, at 14:08, Ishita Bandyo wrote:

I am no expert for sure, but they did say the condition was idiopathic, Richard was over age 10 when it started; it was probably around the onset of puberty. And they did say that his build was unusually slender for a man's. I am thinking that the intensive training that he underwent, of necessity, would have at the least seriously aggravated the condition or possibly even caused it. Had he been dedicated to the Church from childhood, he may have been spared that affliction, or at least the worst effects of it.

A director who has read my script made the comment that it is very hard to make a good guy interesting, but that I somehow managed to do it. However she missed the sardonic humour of THAT play.
Can't win with some....

Not if one is trying to right a historical injustice! No one could accuse
Richard of being boring. The only problem we've got is that there are great
swaths of his life, when I am sure he was very busy, about which there is
very little in the historical record, more's the pity.

BTW,looking at the skull and then looking at my wall paper of the NPG
portrait . . . it seems to me that there is a distinct resemblance,
especially in the strong chin, which to me looks more like Richard's than
the Society of Antiquaries portrait, which I tend to assume is older.

Carol responds:

Maybe CBS will rethink its position when they see him! What wicked uncle ever looked like that? And who would be looking to see if one shoulder was higher than the other? Anyone still wondering whether Anne Neville was in love with him?

I've been rather anxious and unhappy all day, worried about the hunchback idea being reinforced, but these screen caps wipe all that pain away. (It's not that I feel any differently about Richard himself; far from it. It's just that we now have ammunition against his detractors. This is not Shakespeare's Richard! I hope that this face becomes as recognizable as the National Portrait Gallery portrait and more so than the society of Antiquities one, which I never liked.
