About 670,000,000 results on Google

At least, very few people can now say they've never heard of Richard III. I checked Google just out of curiosity. Not accounting for duplicate listings, he has "about 670,000,000 results," meaning he's mentioned (for better or worse) on about that many websites (no indication how many are new but I would venture to guess that several hundred are new and many thousands are updated. Any publicity is better than no publicity if it calls attention to him. (Which does not make the persistent hunchback/wicked uncle nonsense an less irritating.)

A friend of mine on Facebook (yes, a woman about 40 years old!) knew nothing about Richard the Third until his reconstructed face showed up on her facebook page. She is now busily surfing the web and ordering books and dvds on Richard & the War of the Roses. Yes, she has a major crush on the King. My question is still: what is it about this man that makes so many people either love him or hate him? Why does his personality punch through 500 years of history? He must have been something! Maire.

It may well be his looks that got her interested but his personality will KEEP her interested!

Isn't this great?

It's beyond great, Liz!

I was reading some comments on some article about the king and someone wrote: "he rode into battle with a twisted spine - that man was steely!" And I thought: yes! That's what I love about him. In this age of metrosexuals, he was a real man. If this makes me a silly old broad, so be it. Maire.

I like him smooth-faced and boyish and I like him with those deep worry lines - a sign of character. You just can't lose with this guy! Maire.

Hi, Maire -

You should send an email to Ishita off the list, which you should be able to
do as long as she hasn't blocked her email, as Marie mentioned she has done.
Ishita's email should be visible in the heading of the email.

Carol responds:

I don't know how it works from your email, but if you're on the forum website you can click Reply and then choose the person's e-mail address instead of replying to the group. The address will be incomplete, but the message will go through. (Of course, some people use those e-mail addresses chiefly for Yahoo groups and may not respond quickly.

Re: About 670,000,000 results on Google

I've thought for a long time that people respond to him for good or ill at the very least because he's an archetypal figure on multiple levels. But I don't think I could begin to understand him as an archetypal construction in people's psyches without studying Caroline Myss and Jung for the next five years.

Beyond the archetype, people also seem to respond to him personally. I can't explain it when someone alive "resonates" to me. So how in the world can I explain it when a long-dead king resonates.

How many of us would also say, "I've never had this sort of reaction to any other historical figure"?

My question is still: what is it about this man that makes so many people either love him or hate him? Why does his personality punch through 500 years of history? He must have been something!

Hi, Weds -

So true! Except that I must confess I've had a similar feeling for Bela
Lugosi. One could analyse that both Lugosi and Richard are archetypal
figures. For me, it's not only that they are basically appealing and
interesting people, but they are both grossly misunderstood. I am drawn in
part to understand people who are often caricatured by the hoi polloi, and
that certainly applies to both Bela and Richard! And I have found them both
to be very rewarding subjects of study! (smiley face)

You had a similar feeling for Bela Lugosi? Whoa.

I was a 15-year-old, starstruck fan of Vincent Price when I met him the first time. I was shaking so badly, my mother had to ask for his autograph because I was incapable of speech. The second time was when I was an undergraduate on my own and not nearly so shy. He talked casually to a group of us for an hour after presenting his lecture, "The Villains Still Pursue Me," and a more kind, eloquent man I've never met. And he told great stories of his co-stars, with never a bad word about any of them.

Even given my speechlessness the first time around, I didn't react to him as I did to Richard. If I'm nutter-bats, so be it. :)

When I was about 15, Robert Redford and Paul Newman were shooting a film in New Orleans. My mother and I went to the location and watched. Both men, astonishingly handsome, were small and slight - gracile! It did not dim my love for them both, great actors and fine looking men! My mother was gaga, but said they were smaller pants that she did, and she is a little thing!
