Richard's Height

Richard's Height

I may have missed this, and if so I apologize; but has it been determined how tall Richard was?

I find the comments about his bone structure and "masculinity" interesting as I recall that the average Roman gladiator was about 5 feet 3 inches with fighters from other nations on average about 5 feet 10 inches tall. The net fighters- retiarius - were smaller, strong, fast, and extremely proficient killing machines. They bore little resemblance to the hulking gladiators of Hollywood.

So despite Richard's smaller stature or his lack of a heavy bone structure, he probably had an excellent strength to weight ratio as a result of his knight's training and warrior life. I also find it interesting that the medical literature suggests that physical exercise continually practiced can accomplish wonders with moderately severe scoliosis.

Just some thoughts from a lurker who is fascinated by the discussions...

They said that if he had been straight-backed, he'd've stood roughly 5'8".

Apologies if this has already been answered, but the Leicester team says he was about 5' 8", with some shortening of apparent height because of the scoliosis. They didn't give a number for his apparent height, that I recall.

Just look to Joseph Pilates, for what exercise can do.

Flo - they said on the documentary that Richard would have been 5'8"
without the scoliosis they were unable to say what he 'actually' was - it
depends on the 'correct' curvature of the spine at the time - which was not
clear from the laid out spine...
