Re: Teeth

Megan Lerseth
I think it's the sugar thing, as well as a visual contrast thing. A friend of
mine who's in forensic archaeology said this about the state of Richard's teeth:

"On the one hand teeth archaeological remains often have much nicer teeth than
what we'd expect from a modern standpoint, but you have to remember that people
in these contexts had diets very different than we do, meaning our teeth face
different types of wear and tear. I have no background in medieval European
archaeology so I won't speak to that, but in North America, for example, you can
tell when domesticated corn was incorperated into the diets of many Native
American populations because there's a dramatic, population-wide deterioration
in the health of their teeth (especially in regards to the number of cavities,
which go up because of all the sugars in corn).
But look at some other, larger photos of this skull and you can see that the
teeth are still pretty rough. Look at how flat the teeth are wornthat's from
chewing a very rough diet. Stone-ground flour/meal is particularly rough on the
teeth, as in addition to the larger grains there's often fine bits of
grit/stone/sand mixed in from the milling process that over time really wears
down on your teeth. The wear is especially prominent on his upper canines,
where in the first photo you can kind of see a smaller, darker ring of material
on what would have been the cusp. That might be exposed dentin, meaning he's
worn right through the hard enamel and into the soft tissues of his teeth.
That's not good at all. Say hello to infection and eventual tooth death.
Also take note of all the dark crud at the base of his teeth. That's all the
stuff encrusted at his gum line. There also appears to be some tooth loss: not
the top left central incisor, which looks more like post-mortem loss (it's
pretty rare to find a skull with all the teeth they had at death, since the soft
tissue ligaments holding the tooth into the socket also decays), but there looks
like there's bone absorption around where his bottom second and third molars
should be on the left side (pressuming that his third molars erupted). That
takes time, so he lost those teeth well before his death.
Long story short: they look nice because they're mostly white, which is a
reasonable thing to see given that a.) they're contrasted against very brown
bone, enhancing the effect and b.) the medieval dieteven a rich one fit for
royaltyfalls far short of our own when it comes to enamel-staining food, drink,
and other vices like smoking."

So his teeth were about average for the time, and definitely not black a la
Henry's, but not particularly great, either.

But why are Richard's teeth in such good condition? Is it the sugar thing?

Poor Bess, married to a man with black teeth and a tight wallet...

Wow! What an amazing post. All I could concentrate on was that the man had no fillings. Stupid, I know, but so different from the modern mouth. I did notice that the canines showed no sign of "sharpness" if you know what I mean.

A bit ironic, given how popular vampire!Richard is if you poke in the right
corners.

I feel like I read something about him losing those back teeth in battle when he
was still fairly young, but I can't for the life of me remember where. It was
probably at least seven or eight years ago, but it stuck in my head enough that
when they showed a picture of the skull earlier this week, it was another thing
that made me nod and go "Yes, that's him."

They said he ate a lot of fish. Maybe a seafood diet doesn't translate to a lot of sugar, but he had lost all but one of his molars, and the bone had filled in so it wasn't recent losses. I'm wondering if he ground his teeth and cracked the molars.

One of my favorite musicals (Tanz der Vampire) has a vampire in the ensemble
who's meant to be Richard (at least in Germany- in Hungary, Belgium, and Russia
they replaced him with Ludwig of Bavaria). This seems to be less of a
villainization tactic and more just picking a recognizable historical figure-
the lead vampire has a portrait of a vampiric Henry VIII and Elizabeth I among
his ancestors, and the same creepy crypt that Richard climbs out of also houses
vampire!Shakespeare, vampire!Christina of Sweden, vampire!Napoleon and a female
vampire who's sometimes identified as Anne Neville (she's dressed in clothes
from the same era and usually paired with the Richard vampire). They give him a
very mild hump, but he's always played by one of the leading dancers in the
ensemble (which means that in the finale, where all the costumes are
semi-modernized and changed to black leather, you get the interesting sight of a
humpbacked, vampire Richard III who's able to lift his leg before him at a 90
degree angle while bending backwards and then dropping into a split on the
floor).

I understand there's also a children's book pretending to be a 19th-century
vampire hunters' guide that pegs Richard as a vampire who ate his nephews and
who's still out there somewhere in hiding (it was a human decoy who died at
Bosworth). They seem to have taken a list of reputed historical villains and
thrown darts at the wall to pick them- apparently the Borgias weren't even
really a family, just a vampire coven.

Perhaps she died before his teeth got really bad.  After all his teeth couldn't have been that bad when he was young, could they?

I always tend to forget that Henry was younger than Richard.

Carol responds:

No need. The bust modeled on his death mask http://www.paradoxplace.com/Photo%20Pages/UK/Britain_South_and_West/Westminster_Abbey/Westminster_Images/Henry-VII-BAR.jpg shows that he looked exactly like the bust by Pietro Torrigiano http://tudorhistory.org/henry7/henry7bust.jpg and that the familiar shifty-eyed portrait of a younger Henry is probably true to life. No fan girl admirers flocking around Henry, I'm afraid.

What they will say about their idol I can't guess. Has he been "maligned" by Ricardians? There's a reason why Henry VII has never had his own society. There's nothing admirable about him (unless you consider his stripping the nobility of any power to oppose him an admirable trait) and his successors certainly didn't blacken his reputation. Poor Henry, the victim of those awful Ricardians who call him a usurper with no shred of a claim, not to mention a regicide and propagandist. The tears are welling in my eyes even now. (I hope I don't need to state that I'm being sarcastic, but just in case!)

On another note, someone mentioned Richard's life presented as Camelot. I vaguely recall reading a Ricardian novel in which every chapter had an epigraph from Malory, so the comparison has already been made. Does anyone know the book I'm referring to? I think it's quite recent but obviously not memorable like "Sunne in Splendour" or "We Speak No Treason."
